Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - A two-RBI double by Jobduan Morales capped off a five-run bottom of the ninth inning as the Quad Cities River Bandits walked-off the Kernels 9-8 on Thursday night. All five runs in the inning came with two outs as the inning was extended by a two-out fielding error. The Kernels had just scored seven runs in the eighth inning to take an 8-4 lead.
With the Kernels leading 8-4, the ninth inning comeback by Quad Cities began with a walk to Teoscar Hernandez. After a strikeout, Miles Hamblin drew a walk to put two men on. With two outs, Kernels shortstop Jorge Polanco commited a fielding error on a ball hit by Ruben Sosa. The error allowed Hernandez to score and extended the inning. Austin Elkins drove in Hamblin with a RBI single up the middle, making the score 8-6. Brian Blasik's RBI infield single to deep short cut the Kernels lead to 8-7. With runners at first and second, Morales roped a two-RBI double down the left field line. It scored both Elkins and Blasik for the game-winning hit, giving the Bandits a 9-8 victory.
For the second-straight game the Kernels tallied a big number in the eighth inning. The Kernels pushed across seven runs in the eighth to take an 8-4 lead - a night after putting up eight runs in the eighth inning. The Kernels trailed 4-1 entering the eighth frame, but the visitors brought 13 hitters to the plate and collected five hits. A RBI single by J.D. Williams scored Candido Pimentel, making the score 4-2. Two more singles loaded the bases for Adam Brett Walker. Walker bounced a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Williams and Jorge Polanco to knot the score 4-4. Travis Harrison was intentionally walked, and Michael Quesada drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Dalton Hicks and gave the Kernels a 5-4 lead. Walker then scored on a wild pitch, and the Kernels led 6-4. With two outs, Harrison and Quesada came home when Bandits second baseman missed a pop-up off the bat of Byron Buxton. This extended the Kernels advantage to 8-4.
Buxton's lead-off home run in the top of the first inning put the Kernels in front early 1-0. It stayed that way until the fifth inning when a Hamblin RBI sacrifice fly plated Hernandez, tying the game. Jesse Wierzbicki broke the tie with a two-run double in the seventh inning, putting Quad Cities up 3-1. Sosa's RBI single brought Wierzbicki home, and the Bandits led 4-1.
Tyler Jones (3-3) was saddled with the loss, going 2.1 innings in relief. The five runs attached to his line were all unearned after the Polanco ninth-inning error. Josue Montanez allowed the game-winning hit to Morales and was charged with a blown save. Christian Powell went five innings, allowing one run on five hits in his second start. Alex Muren allowed three runs over 1.1 innings. Mitchell Lambson (3-3) picked up the win for the River Bandits, going 1.1 innings. Jordan Jankowski started and allowed one run over four innings. Juan Minaya allowed three runs over 3.1 innings. John Neely blew a save opportunity, allowing four runs (two earned) over 0.1 inning.
