Burlington Bees News Release

Patrick Lowery delivered six scoreless innings and the Burlington Bees defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits 3-1 in the opening game of a four-game series on Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

Entering Friday night's contest, the Bees (25-37) and River Bandits (36-30) had very similar offensive and pitching numbers, but extremely different records. The Bees looked exactly like the team that has a better batting average and earned-run average, defeating a team they were facing for just the first time since early April.

Patrick Lowery (3-3) was not at his best, allowing four hits and issuing a season-high five walks, but he threw six scoreless innings to give Burlington the outing that it needed.

The Bees got the scoring started very early on against Vincent Velasquez (4-3). Sherman Johnson and Kyle Johnson led off the game with back-to-back singles and Wade Hinkle walked to load the bases with nobody out. Andrew Ray struck out swinging and it looked like the inning was going to end on a ground ball by Chance Ross back to Velasquez. The pitcher threw home to start the double play, but his throw was wide of Jobduan Morales and allowed Sherman Johnson to score. Kevin Moesquit and Chevy Clarke flied out to end the threat.

In the fourth, Burlington added two more runs on a single by Clarke that scored Ross and a groundout from Soto that brought home Moesquit.

Joey Krehbiel allowed one run in the seventh when Jesse Wierzbicki singled home Teoscar Hernandez, but Kurt Spomer pitched a scoreless eighth and Robbie Powell pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season.

The Bees and River Bandits will play a doubleheader on Saturday with Brandon Love and Tyler DeLoach making the starts for Burlington and Daniel Minor and Lance McCullers will toe the rubber for Quad Cities. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park.
