Making his first start of the season Reggie Rivard pitched the Calgary Vipers to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Tijuana Big Horn Sheep at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Fort McMurray, Alberta resident threw six scoreless innings while allowing only three hits and striking out seven for the win. With the victory the Vipers improved to 3-1 on the second half and 26-21 overall on the Golden Baseball League season.
Also on the mound Daniel Morari, Scott Watson, and Jorge Vasquez all tossed scoreless innings to share in the four-pitcher blanking.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jonny Kaplan doubled, Guillermo Reyes bunted for a base hit, Brent Metheny bounced into a double-play which scored a run, Julio Ramirez walked, and both Drew Miller and Caonabo Cosme singled for a second run and a 2-0 advantage.
The Vipers added to their lead in the fourth frame as Cosme walked, Jorge Mejia doubled, and Luis Taveras cashed two with a single for a 4-0 score.
Another run was scored in the fifth by the Snakes when Reyes singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a Metheny run batted in groundout.
The Vipers conclude this series in Calgary at Foothills Stadium against the Tijuana Big Horn Sheep on Sunday July 18th at 1:35 PM MDT with Family Day.
