Maui Narrowly Escapes Toros with 9-8 Victory

Maui, HI - The Tucson Toros lost 9-8 in a tug of war battle with Maui Na Koa Ikaika on Friday. The loss was the Toros longest 9-inning game of the season, spanning 3:40.

The Toros struck early with a 3 run first inning after a 3 run shot by Cristobal Santana in a back and forth game that featured 4 lead changes. Maui countered in the bottom of the second frame with 4 runs to take their first lead.

The Toros reclaimed the advantage after in the top of the 3rd inning after SS Jose Valdez scored on a wild pitch and LF Lino Garcia was driven in by 1B Cristobal Santana's sac fly. SS Ryan Priddy would tack onto the lead with an RBI single to move ahead 6-4. Maui would add two runs later in the frame to tie the game at 6 a piece.

Maui LF Mark Okano and 3B Keoni Ruth were able to score after each were hit by a pitch in the 4th inning to move ahead 8-6. Toros catcher Luis Apodoca tied the game with RBI singles in the 6th and 8th frames. The Toros high-powered offense was not enough as Maui sealed the victory with solo home run by 1B Jowen Murray in the bottom of the 8th inning.

First basemen Cristobal Santana returned to dominant form for the Toros for the second straight night. Santana homered and drove in 4 runs to lead the Toros. The bomb was his 4th of the season. Catcher Luis Apodoca also had a strong offensive night going 3-for-4, with 2 RBI.

Starter John Bannister was pulled after just 3 1/3 innings of work after allowing 6 hits, 8 earned runs, 5 walks and 1 strikeout. Relievers Jason Hanna, Andrew Snowdon and Toros latest addition Reid Price combined for a three hitter with 5 strikeouts, and one earned run. Price received the loss in his Toros debut.

The Tucson Toros will face the Na Koa Ikaika in Maui on Saturday for game three of a six game series. First pitch is scheduled for 9:35 p.m. Tucson time.
