Chico Outlaws News Release
(Chico, CA) The Chico Outlaws and Victoria Seals both got outstanding starting pitching in Friday night's game at Nettleton Stadium. The difference came out of the bullpen and the Outlaws got by the Seals 2-0 in a GBL North Division matchup.
Demetrius Banks (6-1) started for Chico and breezed through eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six Seals. Throwing 103 pitches, Banks had his changeup working for most of the night and worked both sides of the plate, keeping Victoria's hitters off-balance.
Andrew Arreola of Victoria went seven shutout innings, striking out four Outlaws while allowing just four hits himself, ending up with a no-decision.
The game's only runs scored in the bottom of the eighth off Seals reliever Aaron Easton (3-3), who came on in relief of Arreola. After the first out of the inning was recorded, Mikael Jova and Mike Rose hit back-to-back singles. After a fielder's choice by Santo DeLeon forced Rose out at second, there were runners on the corners with two outs. Outlaws rookie first baseman Carlos Lopez delivered an RBI single to center, scoring Jova with the eventual game-winning run.
Former big leaguer Brandon Villafuerte was summoned out of the Seals bullpen by manager Kip Gross to relieve Easton. The Outlaws other rookie, shortstop Pascual Del Real, then smacked an RBI single of his own to drive in DeLeon and put Chico up 2-0, giving them a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Josh Dew pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning in relief of Banks and picked up his first save of the year in 19 appearances out of the Outlaws bullpen.
The Outlaws are now 1-1 in the second half; 33-13 overall. Victoria is 0-1 in the second half; 22-24 overall.
Right hander Javier Ortiz (1-2, 3.47) goes for Chico in the rubber match tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at the Nett opposite rightie Jino Gonzalez (1-4, 4.79) of the Seals.
