Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
READING, PA - Luke Ritter's season-high four RBI along with a four-run sixth inning proved the difference as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies defeated the Reading Fightin Phils 7-3 on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Rumble Ponies have taken two of the first three games of the series and won three of their last four overall.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first to Reading (24-24, 54-63), the Rumble Ponies offense immediately went to work as Carlos Cortes hit a leadoff single to begin the second. The next batter, Ritter, belted a two-run home run to left center that tied the game at two.
The teams would exchange runs in the fifth as Jeremy Vasquez RBI single made it 3-2 Binghamton (17-30, 45-71) in the top half of the frame. McCarthy Tatum's solo home run evened the score at three in the bottom of the inning.
In the sixth, Ronnie Mauricio and Cortes began the frame with first pitch singles against Tyler McKay (1-2). Cortes was able to reach second as the throw went to third, setting up runners at second and third with no out. That set up Ritter, who hit a two-run single to center that put Binghamton on top 5-3.
Ritter than stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. That led to a Rowdey Jordan sacrifice fly plating Ritter to make it 6-3. Two batters later, Brandon McIlwain absolutely demolished a ball over the left field scoreboard giving the Ponies a 7-3 lead capping off the scoring in the frame.
Hunter Parsons (1-2) earned the win in relief allowing just one hit over three scoreless innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Ponies pitchers combined to hold the Fightins to four hits on the night.
Cortes and Mauricio both extended their hitting streaks to seven games, as Cortes was 2-4 with two runs scored and Mauricio 2-5 with a run scored. Mauricio now has a hit in 10 of his last 11 games.
The two teams continue the series on Friday night with first pitch at 7:00 PM and pregame coverage getting underway at 6:45 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.
Postgame Notes: Ritter finished 2-4 with two runs scored, his two-run homer was his 11th of the season...Vasquez also had a multi-hit game.
