Ringhofer's Moonshot Completes Dramatic Rox Comeback
June 14, 2016 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
St. Cloud Rox News Release
Thunder Bay, ON - It was a night to remember. A ball that went into orbit. An incredible comeback. Luke Ringhofer (South Dakota State) sent a ball soaring over the right field fence. But it was more than just that. It was a grand slam to break a 5-5 tie in the ninth inning as part of a monumental 9-run ninth for St. Cloud (9-6) in an 11-5 win over the Thunder Bay Border Cats (0-15). Luke finished with two hits and four RBI's to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
"Probably the farthest ball I have hit," Ringhofer said. "I didn't feel much at all on the swing so that was a good thing."
This ninth inning was one for the ages. Denis Karas (California) started off the frame with an opposite field single and the dominos began to fall from there. This was the first hit for the Rox since the fourth inning. TJ Friedl (Nevada) and Rick Ramirez (McNeese State) both record two RBI hits in this one inning alone. These top two hitters in the order went a combined 6-11 with 4 RBI's.
St. Cloud entered the top of the ninth inning down 5-2 with only four hits in the contest on the offensive end. The ninth inning proved to be a different story as the club powered a season high 9 hits and 9 runs in an offensive surge that will be remembered this season.
"It was frustrating," Ringhofer explained. "Augie was just telling us to keep our heads up the whole game and we did."
The Rox squandered many opportunities at the beginning of the game. The squad left eight runners on base through the first four innings. Mason Mamarella (Kent State) was all of the offense during this span with a two-run single to centerfield.
RHP Austin Dubsky (Murray State) battled through six tough innings as the starter. He surrendered eight hits and three earned runs in his appearance. Bobby Gauvreau (Georgia Tech) earned the win out of the bullpen with two scoreless innings.
The Rox resume their long five game road trip Wednesday night when they face the Thunder Bay Border Cats (Ontario) for the second straight night. RHP Austin Caspersen (St. Cloud State) starts for St. Cloud The Rox Solid Pregame Warmup starts at 5:35 p.m CT. First pitch at 6:05 p.m. CT.
Tonight's game one St. Cloud Times Player of the Game was Luke Ringhofer (South Dakota State) who was 2-3 with a grand slam HR and 4 RBI. For more coverage of the Rox during the 2016 season visit www.sctimes.com.
