WILMINGTON, DE (AUGUST 10, 2011) - Andre Rienzo and Ryan Kussmaul combined to throw seven one-hit innings to finish off a doubleheader sweep of the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium. The Dash won game one 6-2 and triumphed in the second contest 2-0 for the team's first sweep of a doubleheader in over two years.
The Dash (26-18, 58-56) grabbed an early lead in game one of the double dip, notching a run with two outs in the first inning. Jared Mitchell walked before Andy Wilkins lined to left for the second out. After Ian Gac extended the inning with a single, Juan Silverio followed suit with another base hit to score Mitchell and give Winston a 1-0 lead.
After the Dash left the bases loaded in a scoreless second, Winston was able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity in the third against Tim Melville. Gac led off with a walk and two batters later, Brady Shoemaker singled. Kevin Dubler was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Nick Ciolli, who drove in Gac with a sacrifice fly to double the Dash lead. Daniel Wagner followed with an RBI single, driving Melville (8-8) from the ballgame.
New pitcher Michael Mariot was greeted by an RBI single from Tyler Saladino to make it 4-0 Winston-Salem. The Dash added two more one inning later on Shoemaker's two-run single.
Justin Cassel, making his first start for Winston-Salem since 2007, fired three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Three singles loaded the bases and Jose Bonilla brought home John Whittleman with a base hit on the infield to get the Blue Rocks (17-28, 53-61) their first run. Whittleman had a solo home run in the seventh inning to complete the scoring.
Leroy Hunt (3-1) threw the last three innings for the win while Melville (8-8) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between Rienzo and prospect left-hander Noel Arguelles. The Dash had more chances than the Rocks in the early innings, but neither team could score over the first five frames.
Winston-Salem finally cracked the scoring column when Arguelles exited after five innings. Ryan Dennick put runners on first and second with one out before going to a 3-2 count against Mike Blanke. The Dash catcher lined the payoff pitch to right-center field for a base hit, scoring Silverio from second base for the first run of the ballgame.
Silverio gave Winston an insurance run in the seventh inning with an RBI single that brought Saladino home to up the lead to two runs.
Rienzo was brilliant in his second start off the disabled list. The Brazilian did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning, when Yem Prades' soft line drive went mere inches past the outstretched glove of first baseman Ian Gac for a base hit. Rienzo (4-4) walked his only batter later in the inning, but made it out of the frame without allowing a run.
Rienzo departed following the sixth after 70 pitches and Kussmaul mowed down Wilmington in the ninth with two strikeouts and fly out to earn his fifth save in as many chances. He preserved the win for Rienzo, who threw six one-hit innings with seven strikeouts. Dennick (2-5) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in two innings.
The doubleheader sweep was Winston-Salem's first since June 19, 2009. Those two wins also came at Wilmington, 783 days before the Dash's sweep on Wednesday.
