TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and New Britain Rock Cats will meet in the finale of a three-game series...Daryl Maday tossed eight scoreless innings and Michael Ambort broke through a scoreless tie with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth as the Flying Squirrels won their second straight from the Rock Cats 4-1 on Tuesday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander David Mixon gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Earned his first Double-A win in his first home start on 4/16 against Reading...Allowed just one run on three hits over six innings...Struck out four and walked two...Retired the first 11 batters that he faced...First hit allowed was a Mike Spidale infield single with two outs in the bottom of the 4th inning...Gave up his lone run in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out, RBI double off of the bat of Tagg Bozied...Threw 78 pitches, 46 strikes...Threw 59 pitches through the first five innings, 19 in the sixth...Retired the leadoff batter in each of his first four innings, but allowed him to reach in the fifth and sixth (E6 and a walk)...Recorded eight ground outs, five fly outs, and four strike outs.
Right-hander Mike McCardell gets the nod in the finale of a three-game series for the Rock Cats...Allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings in his last outing at Harrisburg on 4/15...Struck out four and walked two, not factoring into the decision...Suffered the loss on 4/10 against New Hampshire...Allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits in four innings of work...Struck out none and walked four...Left-handed batters are 8-for-25 (.320) against him while right-handed batters are 2-for-12 (.167)...Split time between Advanced-A Fort Myers and Double-A New Britain in 2009...Was 9-6 with a 3.93 ERA in 17 starts with Fort Myers...78K/16BB in 94.0 IP...Promoted to New Britain and went 5-2 with a 4.10 ERA in nine starts...40K/16BB in 48.1 IP...Spent all of 2008 with Low-A Beloit...Went 9-4 with a 2.86 ERA in 22G/21GS...139K/25BB in 135.1 IP...Held opponents to a .219 BAA...Selected by MIN in the 6th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Kutztown University.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Flying Squirrels improved to 5-1 at The Diamond after last night's 4-1 win over New Britain...Richmond has outscored its opponents 19-11 at home...Flying Squirrels' pitchers have posted a 1.83 ERA at home versus a 3.41 ERA on road...The offense has posted a .256 batting average at home while batting just .235 on the road.
FOUR MORE: Richmond again matched its season-high for runs scored in a game with the four runs last night...It marked the fifth time the Flying Squirrels have scored four runs and was the third time in four games...The club has scored just 33 runs through 13 games (2.5 R/G), second fewest in the 12-team Eastern League (Harrisburg-31).
IT'S A HIT: Michael Ambort went 3-for-4 last night with a double and two RBI...The three-hit performance was just the second for a Flying Squirrels' batter this season...Conor Gillaspie also collected three hits on Friday against Reading...The 24-year-old was 3-for-31 (.097) at the plate with no extra base hits entering the game.
OUCH!: The Flying Squirrels have been hit by pitches 10 times, most in the Eastern League...New Britain batters are tied for being hit the second-most times, seven...Brandon Crawford has been plunked three times, tied for tops in the league.
JARS OF CLAY: Outfielder Clay Timpner went 1-for-3 in last night's contest...The 26-year-old is currently on a five-game hitting streak, going 8-for-15 (.533) with a double, two walks, and two runs scored...Overall, Timpner is 10-for-22 (.455) in 10 games this season...He was selected in the 4th round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Central Florida...Timpner had spent each of the previous three seasons with Triple-A Fresno and hit .264 over that span with the Grizzlies.
CATCH OF THE DAY: Richmond catcher Jackson Williams has hits in each of his first 10 games this season...The 23-year-old is 13-for-31 (.419) at the plate with three doubles, a triple, a home run, and two RBI...The triple on Monday against New Britain was the first of his career...He currently leads the Eastern League in batting average...Williams hit just .223 in 105 games with Connecticut last season and was a career .217 hitter in 244 professional games...The Oklahoma product has also thrown out 54.5% of would-be base stealers (6-for-11), tied for the top mark in the Eastern League.
HORSESHOES AND HAND GRENADES: All 13 games for the Flying Squirrels this season have been decided by three runs or less..A save has been recorded for the victorious team in 11 of the 13...The average margin of victory/defeat is 2.2 runs (28R/13G).
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Daryl Maday tossed eight scoreless innings last night extending his personal scoreless innings streak to 16 2/3...The 24-year-old has not allowed a run since the second inning of his first start on April 10th at Bowie...The eight innings was the longest start of his career.
PURITAN CLEANERS DIRTY SQUIRREL: Thomas Neal was named the "Dirty Squirrel of the Game" Tuesday night after diving into third base on a wild pitch and making a head-first diving catch in the top of the seventh inning.
