Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, OH - The Altoona Curve pulled off a three-game sweep of the 2009 Eastern League Champion Akron Aeros (AA - Cleveland Indians) using a 9-6 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Canal Park.
After falling behind early, the Curve would overcome a 3-0 deficit in the third inning by plating four runs on four hits. Jim Negrych, who finished the afternoon 3-for-4, would double home the first run while Chase d'Arnaud, who enjoyed a 2-for-5 day, doubled home another tally to cut the Altoona disadvantage to 3-2. Matt Hague would then single home a pair of runs which put Altoona ahead, 4-3 at the time.
The Aeros would tie the contest 4-4 before a Kris Watts two-run homer made it a 6-4 game. Akron would again answer with a pair of runs off of Curve starter Tim Alderson, who went 4.2 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out one.
That's as close as Akron would get as winning pitcher Tony Watson (1-0) would shut down the Aeros (6-8) over 3.1 innings, striking out a season-high six batters. Altoona would take the lead on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning. Alex Presley would score after Josh Harrison singled on the play and then found himself in a rundown which he would stay in long enough to allow Presley to score, putting the Curve up 7-6.
Altoona would tack on two more insurance runs with one coming in the seventh inning - a sacrifice fly by Jose de los Santos and one more in the top of the ninth - an RBI single by Hague, who finished with 3 RBIs on the afternoon.
Altoona (10-3) finishes their road trip with a 4-2 record and heads back to Blair County Ballpark to open a seven-game homestand in Curve, PA on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. when they welcome in the Erie SeaWolves (AA - Detroit Tigers) for the first game of a four-game series. Altoona will give the ball to LHP Rudy Owens (0-0, 5.06) while Erie will turn to righty Thad Weber (1-0, 1.64).
