CHARLOTTE, NC - The Richmond Kickers battled the Charlotte Independence to a scoreless draw Friday night in a match that was terminated just after the 45th minute for the second time in as many weeks as persistent thunderstorms peppered the Charlotte area.

Just before the threatening weather moved over Ramblewood Soccer Complex, the Independence nearly broke the stalemate with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Defender Ben Newnam latched onto a goal kick in the midfield and slotted a through ball to Carlos Alvarez who eluded his mark and rifled a shot from the top of the box, beating Kickers goalkeeper Travis Worra but denied by the crossbar.

The Independence first tested Worra 20 minutes earlier when Alex Martinez received the ball on the left wing and fed a leading pass to Jorge Herrera who raced to the end line. He whipped a cross into the box from a difficult angle that Worra punched away from the near post. However, the rebound fell to Paulo Del Piccolo but his one-time blast glanced just wide of the upright.

The Kickers responded when Nate Shiffman battled for the ball on the right touchline, earning a throw-in deep in Charlotte territory. Jason Yeisley launched the ball into the swarming box, connecting with Matthew Delicâte who leapt above the fray but his header trickled just wide.

The Richmond Kickers continue their three-week road stand in Louisville on Saturday, July 4 before returning to City Stadium to host the English Premier League's West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, July 19. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
