York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution used four unanswered runs to erase an early deficit and pick up their fourth consecutive victory, with a 4-3 win at Southern Maryland on Tuesday evening. Brian Pounds went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs in the comeback while a squeeze bunt by Eric Patterson with two outs in the ninth inning completed the come-from-behind effort. York will aim for a fifth straight victory when the two teams square off at 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
Southern Maryland jumped to an early lead, scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Fred Lewis drew a leadoff walk, aided by a couple of close pitches that Revs starter Frank Gailey wanted for strikes. After a single by Casey Stevenson moved Lewis to third, a Zach Wilson sac fly to deep right brought home the game's first run. Jovan Rosa connected on a two-run homer to left-center with two outs in the inning, giving the Crabs a 3-0 head start.
Pounds launched a towering home run over the left field porch to get the Revs on the board right away, leading off the second inning.
Gailey was tested in the bottom of the second, as an error and a single put the first two runners on base. A sacrifice bunt by Casey Frawley put both runners in scoring position, but Gailey struck out Lewis and retired Stevenson on a fly out, and did not allow another runner to reach scoring position all night. The lefty allowed just three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six, tying a career-high with seven innings pitched for the second straight start.
Pounds capped a lengthy full-count battle with Crabs starter Daryl Thompson, lining another home run onto the left field porch in the top of the fourth. The two home runs give Pounds a team-best nine on the season, seven of which have been hit in his last 12 games.
Brandon Boggs cranked a game-tying solo homer on a line drive down the right field line to lead off the sixth, deadlocking things at 3-3. It was Boggs' seventh home run of the season and third in his last five games.
York had an opportunity with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, but Crabs reliever Orlando Santos induced an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Andres Perez.
The Revs would cash in an inning later, however, doing so against Southern Maryland closer Erik Hamren who entered with a tie score. Pinch-hitter Telvin Nash drove a double deep to the right-center gap with one out to set the table. A walk to Jose Constanza would follow. Hamren induced a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Mikey Reynolds to put runners at the corners. That set the stage for Patterson, who dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt with pinch-runner James Simmons sprinting home. Patterson legged out catcher Craig Maddox's throw to first, picking up his seventh RBI in eight games and completing the comeback, giving York a 4-3 lead.
Luis Perdomo issued a four-pitch walk to Jovan Rosa to begin the bottom of the ninth, but got a huge lift from catcher Luis De La Cruz. On his fifth straight ball which was partially blocked, De La Cruz lost the grip on his attempted recovery, prompting pinch-runner Grant Zawadski to break for second. De La Cruz then collected the ball cleanly and fired a strike to nail Zawadski for a crucial first out. Perdomo came back to retire Jamar Walton on a fly out to right, before Maddox kept the game alive with a double to right-center. Ty'Relle Harris entered and slammed the door, however, fanning pinch-hitter Anthony Vega to secure his first save with York, stranding the tying run at third after Maddox had advanced on a passed ball.
Lefty Ron Schreurs (1-0) earned the win with a dominant 1-2-3 eighth inning that included a pair of strikeouts.
Notes: York has won six of its last seven overall, and is 9-4 after starting the second half 1-4. At 10-8, the Revs are two games over .500 in a half for the first time this season, and stay within one game of first place Lancaster. The Revs have blasted 13 homers in their last eight games and 21 long balls in the last 17 contests. Pounds posted his second four-hit performance in the last three games, and set a Revs season-best with 10 total bases. With two RBI, Pounds now has nine extra-base hits and 16 RBI over his last 13 games played. His two-homer game is the Revs' second of the season, joining Patterson who did it on May 20 vs. Long Island. The Revs have won the four games on their current winning streak by a combined five runs including three one-run victories. York lefty Logan Williamson (4-7, 3.78) will face Blue Crabs right-hander Brian Baker (5-6, 4.27) in Wednesday morning's contest. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 10:50 a.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
