WALDORF, MD - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and the Charles County Branch of the NAACP have announced the creation of a task force aimed at initiatives for the regions' youth this summer. Members of the task force include representatives of the Blue Crabs, NAACP, Charles County School District, the Charles County Sheriff's Office, Ministers Alliance and others.

Janice Wilson, Charles County NAACP President, said "This initiative began by our community partner Steve Proctor getting us together with Patrick Day, President/GM of the Blue Crabs. We began to explore ways that we could work together to help our youth. It quickly expanded to include other organizations and individuals," she added.

"School is out and many of the youth in our community are in need of safe places to spend their time," said Wilson. "Summer jobs are difficult to find and there are not as many options for the kids as we would like to see. We are hopeful that this initiative hosted by the Blue Crabs will be able to make a positive impact this summer."

Under the youth initiative plan, Regency Furniture Stadium, home of the Blue Crabs will be made available to community groups for youth programs and activities at no charge this summer. Among the activities in progress and planned are:

- Basketball and flag football tournaments at the stadium in partnership with the Southern Maryland Athletic Program

- Creation of new paid internships by the Blue Crabs that teach real world business skills with candidates proposed by task force

- All Charles County mentoring groups will be provided free tickets to Blue Crabs games

- Creation of student focus groups to suggest additional initiatives and ways to make baseball and the stadium more relevant coordinated through the Charles County Board of Education

- Partnership with the Sheriff's Office for youth activities at the stadium

- Blue Crabs have installed a basketball hoop in the stadium for use during games and other times

"This concept is a home run! Any time we get an opportunity to interact with our youth, we do it because we know the benefits," said Sherriff Troy D. Berry. "We are glad to be part of this vision and we look forward to working closely with all of the partnering agencies."

"We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting initiative," said Patrick Day, Blue Crabs President & General Manager. "We are conveniently located and are on a public VanGO bus line that stops every 44 minutes after the hour until 9:44 p.m. each night right in the stadium parking lot. Regency Furniture Stadium is a green oasis with a professional quality playing field, playgrounds, parking lot, and meeting rooms."
