York Revolution News Release

Wilson Valdez' squeeze bunt in the top of the 11th brought home the winning run as the York Revolution nabbed a wild, nail-biting 5-4 victory in Southern Maryland on Tuesday evening. The Revs improve to 21-17 in the second half, once again pulling within three games of first place. With each team having won an extra-inning game to begin the series, the four-game set continues in Waldorf on Wednesday evening.

Tied at 4-4, Jose Constanza (4-for-6) struck a double to left-center with one out in the 11th, barely eluding the diving attempt of center fielder Antone DeJesus who contested the call. Constanza took third on a passed ball, and dove home ahead of the flip from reliever Orlando Santos (3-5) on Valdez' squeeze bunt toward the first base side for the go-ahead run.

Ron Schreurs withstood a charge from the Blue Crabs in the bottom of the 11th to earn his first save. Schreurs struck out DeJesus for the first out, but Casey Stevenson reached on a swinging bunt hit before Zach Wilson took a four-pitch walk. After a visit from Pitching Coach Paul Fletcher, Schreurs quickly retired Jovan Rosa on a line drive to left for the second out. Southern Maryland nearly won the game as Keith Castillo crushed a 2-0 pitch down the left field line, but it barely hooked foul on a call that was vehemently disputed by the home team. Castillo reached on an infield single to load the bases, but Schreurs retired Bryant Nelson on a line out to left to secure the tense one-run victory.

It was a back-and-forth affair all night, as the Revs opened the scoring in the top of the first. Constanza and Valdez (3-for-6) opened the game with base hits, and after Valdez stole second, Eric Patterson (4-for-6) drilled an RBI single to center. Brandon Boggs then took his first of three walks, and Andres Perez made it 2-0 with an RBI single to center as the first five batters reached, four on hits. Patterson was thrown out at the plate by DeJesus for the first out, however, as Crabs starter Brian Baker settled in, facing the minimum from that point into the fifth.

Southern Maryland took the lead with RBI singles up the middle from Casey Frawley in the second and Wilson in both the third and fifth innings, taking a 3-2 advantage.

The Revs quickly answered to tie the game in the sixth. Patterson led off with a bloop hit to center and made a great play on the bases, taking third on Boggs' seeing-eye single to shallow right. Patterson scored on a wild pitch by reliever Chris Bodishbaugh, a run charged to Baker, leveling the score at 3-3.

York took the lead in the top of the seventh, again doing so with tremendous baserunning. Constanza reached on a swinging bunt hit with one out, and Patterson kept the inning alive with a two-out single to right. The left-handed batters came through against southpaw reliever Trey Barham, who had previously held left-handed hitters to a 4-for-38 mark on the season. With Boggs at the plate, Constanza broke for third on a stolen base attempt. Catcher Gustavo Molina fired to second attempting to throw out Patterson as the trailing runner. Patterson stayed in a rundown long enough for Constanza to race home, before Patterson safely slid under the tag attempt at second base himself. Constanza's run provided York with a 4-3 edge.

Luis Perdomo issued a pair of one-out walks but retired Rosa on a 1-6-3 double play for a scoreless seventh. Tony Pena stranded two in scoring position, retiring pinch-hitter Craig Maddox on a grounder to second to end the eighth.

With York still holding a one-run lead, DeJesus snuck a squibber into left to lead off the bottom of the ninth and stole second. Stevenson reached on an infield single at first base to put runners at the corners. Closer Josh Judy fanned Wilson for the first out, but Rosa lined an RBI double to right, tying the score at 4-4. Judy came back to whiff Molina and Nelson, stranding two in scoring position to force extras.

York starter Frank Gailey logged a quality start, allowing three runs in six innings. The lefty struck out six, including each of his final three batters.

Notes: The Revs improve to 16-11 in games decided in a team's last at-bat. The Revs improve to 4-2 on their current eight-game road trip with a pair of extra-inning victories. York has played 12 extra-inning games on the season, setting a new club record. The Revs' six extra-inning victories also establishes a new franchise best. The Revs have played back-to-back extra-inning games twice in the last week. The Revs have successfully squeeze bunted to score runs three times this season, twice by Valdez. It is the second time the Revs have driven in the winning run in a game at Southern Maryland on a squeeze bunt, as Patterson did it in the ninth inning of a 4-3 victory in Waldorf on July 28. The Revs improve to 9-10 vs. the Blue Crabs on the season, 7-2 in the second half. Constanza's four hits and three runs tie a season-best. Patterson's four hits establishes a season-high. York lefty Logan Williamson (6-9, 3.70) will face Blue Crabs right-hander Shaun Garceau (3-2, 2.09) on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
