Lancaster Stormers News Release
The whitewashes keep on coming.
One night after the Lancaster Barnstormers were shut out for the 13th time this season, five members of their own pitching staff combined on a four-hitter to blank the Camden Riversharks, 3-0, at Campbell's Field.
The 11th shutout of the season for Lancaster pitching kept the Barnstormers three games ahead of York in the Freedom Division race.
Reed (5-7) worked six innings, yielding two singles while walking five and striking out three, nearly identical numbers to his last win, 10 days prior in York. He was in trouble only in the fourth inning when the Riversharks loaded the bases on walks to Ryan Strieby and Jose Gil around a single fisted into center by Daniel Rockett. Reed calmly coaxed a one-hopper back to the mound out of Zach MacPhee to end the inning.
Scott Gracey got into a fix in the seventh. He walked Gil to start the inning, and, one out later, Michael Rockett lined a double into the right field corner. Gracey roared back to fan Brandon Chaves for the second out, and Paddy Matera grounded to short to end the inning.
Al Yevoli and Scott Patterson combined to fan the side in the eighth, and Marcus Walden picked up a double play after a leadoff single by Daniel Rockett in the ninth to nail the game down for his fifth save.
The Barnstormers scored all of their runs on smashes off the gloves of Camden defenders. Three singles loaded the bases with one out in the fifth when Juan Apodaca scalded a ball one step to shortstop Chaves' left. The back deflected off Chaves into shallow right center as Lance Zawadzki and Luke Hughes raced home to score.
In the eighth, Apodaca reached on an infield single and stole second. With one out, Anderson Feliz sent a hot grounder down the first base line which leapt over Joel Guzman's glove for an RBI single, giving Lancaster its final margin.
The series concludes on Thursday evening. Lancaster will send right-hander Chad Beck (3-1) to the hill against lefty Daniel Herrera (5-4). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
