Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Sugar Land, TX- August 19, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (21-18, 47-62) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (16-23, 52-57) 7-5 at Constellation Field on Wednesday evening. Sugar Land has now won two of the first three games of the week long series.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cody Scarpetta (1-4) was tagged with the loss, going four and one-third innings, allowing six runs (three earned runs) on six hits, walking three and striking out two while throwing two wild pitches. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Sean Gallagher (3-9) picked up the win, tossing six innings, surrendering four runs (three earned runs) on seven hits, walking two and striking out four. Derrick Loop pitched a scoreless ninth inning, earning his 13th save.
The Bluefish took the early 2-0 lead off Gallagher in the top half of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Welington Dotel, scoring Bryan Sabatella, and a sacrifice fly by John Alonso, plating Josh Prince. Sugar Land responded with a run in their half of the first of Scarpetta trimming the 'Fish lead to 2-1 on a run-scoring double by Travis Scott, bringing in Jeff Dominguez.
Bridgeport made it 3-1 in their favor in the second as Dotel was at it once again, delivering an RBI single which scored Ethan Chapman to give the 'Fish their second two-run lead of the night. The advantage was short lived as the Skeeters pushed across four runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead and the home team never looked back. The Bluefish would get to within a single run at 5-4 in the top of the fourth as the All-Star Dotel drove home his third run on the evening with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Chapman who led off the frame with a double. Down 6-5 in the eighth with the tying-run on third base in the person of Luis Rodriguez and two men out, the Bluefish thought they had tied the game up on a slowly hit ground ball to second base by Sabatella, but the speedy All-Star was ruled out at first base on a very controversial call to end the threat. Loop surrendered a one-out walk to Dotel in the ninth, but induced the dangerous Wilson Batista to ground into a game-ending double play, and the Skeeters held on by the skin of their teeth for the one-run victory. Dotel, Chapman, and Andres Rodriguez led the offensive attack for Bridgeport with a pair of hits each.
The Bluefish continue their series with the Sugar Land Skeeters on Thursday night deep in the heart of Texas. Bridgeport returns to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, August 24th when they welcome in their cross-sound rival Long Island Ducks as the 2015 Ferry Cup Series continues. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Bluefish are showing their appreciation for Late Show host David Letterman. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a David Letterman Paper Face Fan.
