York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution were quieted offensively by four Somerset pitchers, dropping their series opener to the Patriots 5-1 on Friday night at Santander Stadium. The Revs suffer a fourth consecutive loss after winning four of their previous five, and are also dealt a ninth straight home loss. Somerset has now won 11 of their last 13 games. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
Somerset grabbed a quick lead in the first on a Thomas Neal RBI double to right field, but York had an immediate answer.
Wilson Valdez reached on a bunt single with one out in the first, stole second, took third on a throwing error by catcher Adam Donachie, and scored as Eric Patterson drove a sacrifice fly to deep center field, tying the game at 1-1. The stolen base for Valdez was the 64th of his Revs career, moving within five of matching Scott Grimes' club record.
Somerset retook the lead an inning later, however, as Donachie lumbered home on a wild pitch and Robert Andino drove an RBI double to right, giving the Patriots a 3-1 advantage.
Neither team scored again until the ninth inning when the Patriots plated a pair of insurance runs with two outs on an RBI double down the left field line by Aharon Eggleston and an RBI single to right from Neal who drove in his second run of the game.
Somerset starter Sean Bierman (3-1) allowed just one unearned run over six innings to earn the win. The lefty surrendered only four hits including just one after the second inning. Bierman walked three batters including two in the sixth but received a diving catch from Eggleston in left field on a line drive off the bat of Bryan Pounds to finish off his outing.
York starter Rommie Lewis (3-2) was handed the loss despite logging a quality start, giving up three runs in a season-high six innings of work.
Notes: The Revs are held to just one run for the second straight game. Patterson owns both RBI for the Revs over the last two contests. York has been held to a combined two runs over the last 23 innings, after scoring nine runs in the first four innings of Wednesday night's game. The Revs fall to 0-4 against the Patriots, having combined to score four runs in those four games. Valdez (2-for-4) extends his hitting streak to six games. York outfielder Shannon Wilkerson made his debut, notching one of York's five hits, a single off the left field Arch Nemesis in the fifth. Stephen Penney fired a perfect eighth inning, making his 175th appearance with the Revs, a club record for a reliever; he is currently five shy of the overall record of 180 appearances held by Corey Thurman. York starting pitchers have allowed three runs or fewer in 17 of the last 20 games. York righty Corey Thurman (1-2, 7.13) starts Saturday's contest opposite Patriots right-hander Mickey Storey (4-0, 0.93), the league's ERA leader. It is Relay for Life Night and features Post-Game Fireworks presented by MAHLE Aftermarket, Inc. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
