BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Sugar Land Skeeters pitching staff threw its first shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over Bridgeport on the road. Derek Blacksher, Andrew Carpenter, Andrew Johnston, Adrian Martin and John Lujan scattered nine hits in the winning effort. The Skeeters, winners of two-in-a-row, improve to 12-16 on the year while Bridgeport falls to 14-13. Beamer Weems paced the offense, going 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI.
Pitching held the upper-hand through the first four innings of the contest, but the Skeeters finally scratched across the game's first run in the top of the fifth. Patrick Palmeiro and Denny Almonte each worked consecutive walks off Bluefish starter D.J. Mitchell to open up the inning before the pair advanced 90-feet on a wild pitch. Willy Taveras picked up his first RBI in a Sugar Land uniform with a groundout to second, pushing across the first run in the contest. A groundout and an infield popup would limit the Skeeters threat to just one run, however.
The Skeeters tacked on the second run of the contest in the top of the sixth to increase the cushion to 2-0. Dustin Martin singled to kick off the frame and moved up to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Weems advanced Martin to third on a grounder to shortstop. Amadeo Zazueta picked up a clutch two-out RBI with a single, inflating the lead to 2-0.
Sugar Land added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth. After Willy Taveras singled and stole second, Travis Scott drew a walk and Delwyn Young loaded the bases after the Bluefish's fourth error of the evening. Martin roped an RBI single and two batters later, Weems blasted a single of his own, scoring an important insurance run in the form of Scott, moving the score to 4-0.
Lujan surrendered a pair of singles in the ninth, but held the shutout intact with a strikeout, flyout and groundout, slamming the door for the victory.
