Lancaster Stormers News Release
Gustavo Molina went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI to lead Southern Maryland to a 10-3 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers Friday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium.
The loss was the seventh in the last eight road games for the Barnstormers and drops them six games behind the Blue Crabs in the Freedom Division.
Zach Wilson opened the scoring with a first inning home run off Bryan Woodall (0-3), and the Blue Crabs tacked on four more in the third. Wilson kept the inning alive with a two-strike single into center, sending Antone DeJesus to third. Cyle Hankerd dropped a double down the right field line, and a second run scored on the play when Yusuke Kajimoto bobbled the throw into second. Molina slammed his league leading seventh homer of the season on the next pitch for a 5-0 Southern Maryland advantage.
The Barnstormers nearly recovered the runs. Keith Castillo singled home Blake Gailen in the fourth, and Lancaster would add two in the fifth. Kevin Rivers opened the inning with a ground single into right and went to second on a one-out walk to Kajimoto. Blake Gailen flared a single into left to drive in Rivers, and Kajimoto scored when Brian Cavazos-Galvez ripped a double into the left field corner. Reliever Brian Burres (1-1) struck out Chris Garcia to end the threat with the tying runs in scoring position, and the Barnstormers never picked up another hit.
The Blue Crabs put the game away in the bottom of the inning. Hankerd recorded the second of his three doubles on the night and scored on a single by Molina. Casey Stevenson pounded a double into deep right center to bring Molina across, and Lance Zawadzki failed to handle a grounder by Fred Lewis, allowing the third run to score.
Hankerd doubled again in the eighth and scored on a single by Molina.
The two teams meet again on Saturday evening. Matt Packer (2-2) will make the start for Lancaster against right-hander Brian Baker (1-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.
