York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution climbed into sole possession of first place for the first time in franchise history, with a 5-3 win over the Somerset Patriots on Thursday night. The game was played in front of 4,419 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. York, who entered play tied for the top spot in the south division with Somerset, improves to 5-2 in the second half, while Somerset drops to 4-3.
York went on top early, with Nate Espy clubbing his twelfth homer of the season in the first inning. Espy drove a two-out pitch to deep center, as Mike Lockwood scaled the outfield wall, but could not bring the ball back.
Luis Taveras made it a 2-0 Revs lead in the fifth, on a two-out, solo homer down the leftfield line. It was his first long ball since May 19 at Lancaster, and his second of the season.
Frank Castillo allowed no runs on four hits through his first five innings of work, but the Patriots tied the game with a two-spot in the sixth inning. Danny Garcia led off with a single to right and stole his league-leading 38th bag, getting into scoring position. With one out, Teuris Olivares doubled to right-center driving in Garcia, and Mike Lockwood followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Olivares.
The Revs wasted no time going back in front, however. With two outs in the seventh, Jason Aspito hammered his sixth homer over the wall in right-center, putting York back ahead 3-2.
York then got two huge insurance runs in the eighth. With one out, Kazunori Tanaka singled to left, and stole both second and third base. Keoni De Renne then walked, and he also swiped second. With the infield in, Peter Bergeron narrowly missed a base hit down the leftfield line, before grounding back to the mound, but with two outs, Espy came through with a scorching base hit to center, bringing both runs home to make it a 5-2 game.
Lockwood brought the Patriots to within 5-3, on his 16th homer of the season with two outs in the eighth, but Franklin Nunez, who allowed two singles to start the ninth, putting the tying run at first base, nailed down his fifth save, getting the final two outs on strikes.
Notes: Rayner Bautista, who owns a team-record 11-game hitting streak, missed his second straight game with a shoulder injury... his status is day-to-day... Bergeron and Justin Singleton both saw their nine-game hitting streaks come to an end... De Renne had a five-game streak snapped... the Revs are now 6-4 against Somerset this season, having won five of the last six meetings... York tied a season-high with four stolen bases, all of which came in the final two innings... they also swiped four bags, June 13 at Somerset... the Revs also crushed three homers for the second straight night... Castillo has won three of his last four decisions, improving to 3-3 on the season.
