
Four Runs in the 7th Help Bluefish Beat Bears

NEWARK, NJ - July 20, 2007 - Bridgeport Bluefish designated hitter Marcos Sanchez hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at eight and catcher John Nathans hit an RBI single in the same inning giving Bridgeport a 9-8 lead in a game they would go on to win 11-8 over the Newark Bears in front of 4,117 fans Friday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
With the Bears trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, designated hitter Ramon Castro and third baseman Corey Smith each hit RBI doubles, and catcher John Pachot hit a two-run single to give the Bears a 7-5 lead. Right-fielder Jose Herrera added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give Newark the 8-5 advantage.
For the Bears center-fielder Marcus Nettles finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored, one RBI, and four stolen bases tying the Bears franchise record he set Thursday evening. Pachot ended with two hits and two RBI, and Smith's double in the fifth was his Atlantic League leading 24th of the season. For the Bluefish Nathans went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI, and newly acquired second baseman Steve Hine finished the game 2-for-4 including a two-run double in the top of the second inning, and a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning.
Brendon Davis (0-1) took the loss for the Bears after allowing four runs on six hits in 1.2 relief innings, while Franklin Perez (2-0) earned the victory pitching two scoreless innings in relief surrendering only one hit striking out three. Eddy Ramos picked up his tenth save of the season tossing two perfect innings.
The Bears and Bluefish will complete the three-game series and six-game home and home series Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Gary Knotts (5-5) will take the mound for the Bears against Justin Surge (6-4) for the Bluefish in a re-match of the 2-1 pitchers dual from Monday evening in Bridgeport. Gates open at 5:05 PM to Simpsons Night at The Den featuring a special appearance by Homer Simpson, and a pre-game Homer J. Simpson donut eating contest presented by DiPaolo's Bakery. Fans will receive FREE admission at the box office when they dress as their favorite Simpsons character, wear Simpsons-related apparel, or present any Simpsons-related item.
