St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 9, 2010) - Who fired the first shot? Who will fire the first shot...on goal? Who really wants David Beckham? All these questions and more will be answered during the St. Paul Saints first game back from their 11-day, nine-game roadtrip as history is relived with the "Revolutionary War Redux: USA vs. England."
On Friday, June 11, in preparation for the World Cup opener between the two countries the next day, the Saints will get everyone ramped up with a tale of the tape between USA and England. The promotion will occur during the Saints home game vs. Sioux Falls scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. This is just the most recent battle between these two countries dating back to the Revolutionary War.
The evening will analyze the similarities and differences between the two nations. Everyone in attendance will receive an historical lesson with the Midway Tea Party, partake in Yankee Doodling and witness reenactments such as Paul Revere's Ride and George Washington crossing just about everything. Since the World Cup Match takes place the following day, fans will have the opportunity to show off their favorite goal celebrations.
"We have a tremendous opportunity to accomplish two goals," said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer. "We can work through some of the differences that have existed historically between our friends from across the pond, while working USA Soccer fans into a frenzy for Saturday morning's World Cup matchup."
The Saints have extended an invitation to youth soccer players in the area to help create a World Cup atmosphere and energize fans for the big match on June 12.
Many consider the USA's 1950 1-0 victory over England in the World Cup the greatest upset in soccer history. Will England be able to repay the favor at Midway Stadium in a battle of who has the better flag (the Stars and Stripes vs. the Union Jack), the better symbol (Statue of Liberty vs. Big Ben) or the better reality TV Show (Paris Hilton's My New BFF vs. Paris Hilton's British Best Friend)?
