El Paso Diablos News Release

June 9, 2010 Pensacola, FL - El Paso's pitching staff held down the Pensacola offense for much of the night, but the Pelicans finally were able to break through in the bottom of the tenth inning, as they beat the Diablos 1-0 in ten innings on Wednesday night at Jim Spooner Field. The Pelicans outhit the Diablos 13-2, and were able to even up the series at one a piece.

El Paso's pitching staff did a great job of working in and out of trouble all night, but also received no help from their offense. The Diablos produced just two hits all night, compared to the Pelicans who had 13 hits, but were just lacking the big hit they needed to plate any runs. The Pelicans finally got that big hit from Adolfo Gonzalez in the tenth inning which brought home Javier Brito. The hit came off Nick Renault who loaded up the bases with no out before Gonzalez got his big hit.

The pitching duel to start featured two pitchers who would not figure in the final result. Bryan Rembisz and Amad Stephens followed very different tracks but got to the same place come the seventh inning. Rembisz, in his first start with Pensacola, allowed just one hit in seven scoreless innings. He finished his night by retiring the last 19 in order, and struck out six in the game. Stephens on the other hand, was in and out of trouble, but also pitched seven scoreless innings. He allowed ten hits, but was stranding Pelicans on base all night long. He walked one and struck out just two. The Pelicans offense went on to strand 15 runners on base in the game.

While the Pelicans were getting base runners and scoring chances all night long, El Paso had just two base runners the entire game. They got one hit from Mike Provencher, who was able to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games with a first inning single. Their only other hit produced the Diablos lone scoring threat of the night. Benji Johnson ended a streak of 22 straight Diablos who went down in order, by getting a double in the ninth inning. He moved to third on a sacrifice by Hector Bernal, but a ground out and a strike out ended the threat.

El Paso goes for the series win in the rubber game on Thursday. The game is scheduled to start at 5:45 and can be heard on ESPN 1380 or online at www.diablos.com.
