Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pensacola Pelicans are pleased to announce that pitcher Kevin Johnson, who was affectionately known as "KJ", was selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 20th Round as the 624th overall pick in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.
Johnson, who recently signed with the Pelicans on May 24, pitched in two games for the Pelicans and convinced many fans that he was a young talent in the making of something big.
Johnson, a Pensacola native, ended his college career as one of the most accomplished players in the University of West Florida and Gulf South Conference history. In two seasons with the Argos he claimed seven GSC Pitcher of the Week awards, the most by any player or pitcher in GSC history. He was named to the All-GSC First Team as well as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and American Baseball Coaches Association All-South Region First Team.
In 15 starts for the UWF Argos during the 2010 season, Johnson finished the campaign with an 8-4 record, 3.93 earned run average, and 86 strikeouts, second most in the Gulf South Conference.
In other transactions, the Pelicans added Kyle Brown, a UWF infielder and former teammate of Johnson, to the Pelicans squad this season. Last season for the Argos, Brown hit a team best .375 with 22 RBI, and 69 hits. Brown, from Gulf Breeze, Florida, played at Gulf Breeze High School before playing with UWF.
The Pelicans also signed right-handed pitcher Bryan Rembisz to the team. Rembisz, a Connecticut native, spent 2009 pitching for the Arkansas Travelers, the double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. His career numbers over three professional seasons include a 13-5 record, 3.06 ERA, 145 strikeouts, 52 walks, and have given up only 180 hits in 203.2 innings pitched.
Pensacola completes a long nine-game home stand in ten days tonight and tomorrow versus the El Paso Diablos, both games beginning at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are available at www.pensacolapelicans.com or by calling 850-934-8444.
