Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Osvaldo Rodriguez gave himself an early 26th birthday present with seven solid innings for his league-leading sixth win of the year and the Shreveport-Bossier Captains got three clutch two-out singles - two by Uriak Marquez and one from Jovanny Rosario - and got out of two late jams on defense to help nip the Sioux City Explorers 3-2 at Lewis and Clark Park on Wednesday night.
The Captains (14-11) scratched out the game's first run in the fourth, when Marquez singled on a full count to bring in Bryan Frichter. But an inning and a half later, Sioux City (12-11) put the only blemish on Rodriguez (6-0) when Jared Keel hit his third home run of the season to left-center, a two-run shot to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead.
Marquez came through again in the sixth, driving in Christopher Garcia with a two-out single to tie the game (although Palmer Karr was thrown out on a close play at the plate to keep the game even. One inning later, Bryan Sabatella walked with two outs, ending the night for Sioux City starter David Trahan (2-1). Sabatella stole second on the first pitch to Rosario from reliever Eddy Delacruz, and after another strike, Rosario battled back to 2-2. He then lined one to centerfield for the eventual game-winning hit, scoring Sabatella to give the Captains the lead for good.
Rodriguez got out of a jam in the bottom of that inning, after first baseman Andres Rodriguez dropped what would have been a third out on a throw from shortstop Bryan Frichter. Jared Keel walked, but Darrick Hale's blooper to shallow left center was caught over the shoulder by Frichter to end the inning.
Jameson Maj worked around a one-out hit batter in the eighth, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth, when Ray Serrano singled and T.J. Bohn walked after squaring around to bunt. In came Cody Railsback, who threw ball one to Derek Schermerhorn, who was also squaring. But then Sioux City gambled, and it cost the Explorers deeply. Schermerhorn squared again but pulled the bat back, swinging but grounding the ball to third. Landon Camp fielded the ball cleanly, stepped on third and threw to first for a critical double play.
But Railsback was not out of the woods yet, facing Keel as the potential winning run with the potential tying run at second. The righty fell behind 3-1, but got a called strike and then blew a fastball by Keel to end the game and get his first save of the year.
Notes: The Captains had four innings (including all three that they scored) end on the bases...Rodriguez finished with 10 strikeouts, a season high for the Captains...Shreveport-Bossier was 5-for-10 with three walks with two outs...Only two players, Marquez and Jon Owings for Sioux City had multiple-hit games.
