St. Paul Saints News Release

LINCOLN, NE (June 9, 2010) - Wednesday night's game started out similar to the chaotic Tuesday night game, except it was only the St. Paul Saints bats that made noise scoring five runs in the first and getting an incredible pitching performance from Jake Schmidt as they defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 7-3 at Haymarket Park.

Before the seats were even warm the Saints pounded Saltdogs starting pitcher Tim Brown, who faced just seven batters and got only one out. The first three Saints, Brandon Carter, Josh Alley and Ole Sheldon, all singled to load the bases. Jason Cooper followed with a two-run single to right making it 2-0. Brent Krause followed with an RBI double which scored Sheldon and moved Cooper to third. Gerard Haran's sacrifice fly made it 4-0 and the Saints finished the scoring and chased Brown when Coby Smith doubled off the left field wall making it 5-0.

That was more than enough for Jake Schmidt who was impressive going 8.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out six. The only real mistake he made came in the eighth when he gave up a solo homer to Gavin Dickey, his second of the season. Schmidt helped save a tired bullpen by throwing 102 pitches, 70 for strikes in earning his third win of the season.

The Saints bats were kept quiet from innings two through eight managing just two hits and three total base runners, but got two huge insurance runs in the ninth. With one out Steve Butler laid down a bunt single and Steve Mays followed with a double to left. With two outs Alley ripped a triple inside first and past a diving Phil Hawke that gave the Saints a four run lead that would hold up.

The Saints play their final game of their nine game roadtrip and have a chance to go 5-4 with a win. The final game of the series with the Saltdogs is at 7:05 p.m. at Haymarket Park and the Saints send LHP Ryan Morse (2-0, 3.33) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Billy Weitzman (2-3, 5.18). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
