GARY, Ind. - There's no place like U. S. Steel Yard for the Gary SouthShore RailCats who improved their American Association-best record at home to 26-11 after an 8-4 victory over the Shreveport-Bossier Captains Friday.

The RailCats (48-36) grabbed control early and snapped a four-game skid after Cristian Guerrero's three-run opposite field blast in the seventh put the home team comfortably in from of the visiting Captains who fall to 38-45 after the loss. The top of the ‘Cats order did most of the damage with Adam Klein, Mike Massaro and Brad Boyer collected two hits and two runs scored apiece. Guerrero's 5-RBI night gives the outfielder 75 on the season and is also good for the team lead.

The RailCats win was an important one, as the division rival Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 3-1 earlier in the evening. The ‘Cats maintain a two-game lead in their quest for their seventh consecutive playoff berth and first as members of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

RailCats starter Alain Quijano performed admirably making pitches when needed and more than gave his team a chance to win. The lefty allowed just two runs while scattering seven hits over his 5.2 innings of work. Quijano improved to 4-2 after making his eleventh start with the RailCats, adding four strikeouts and three walks on the night. Righy Brian Grening got the final out of the sixth stranding a runner on third and pitched a scoreless seventh with a pair of strikeouts to his credit as well. Chris Little finished off the Captains after throwing the final two innings and despite allowing a ninth inning homer to Mike Provencher.

The home team got things rolling early scratching together a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. With one out, Massaro singled sharply to right field and advanced to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run with Boyer poking a grounder in the area vacated by Captains second baseman Provencher.

Shreveport-Bossier came back with two runs in the fifth to grab a brief lead. RF Alex Cowart scored on a Bryan Sabatella single and Provencher scored on a wild pitch by Quijano to give the Captains a 2-1 advantage. However, the RailCats stormed back with three runs of their own in the fifth to go back on top 4-2. Massaro and Klein scored on a triple by Boyer in the right field corner and Boyer came home on a sacrifice fly by Guerrero.

The Domincan slugger collected three more RBI on his seventh inning blast over the VehicleInjuryHelp.com sign in deep right centerfield to push the RailCats ahead by six. The ‘Cats added another run as Mike Rohde scored when Klein grounded into a double play in the eighth taking an 8-2 lead to the ninth.
