Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

GARY, In.---Christian Guerrero's three-run home run in the seventh inning capped off a five RBI night as Gary SouthShore defeated the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 8-4 Friday night at U.S. Steel Yard in the first game of their six-game series.

Captains second baseman Mike Provencher went 3-for-5 with two runs and a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough as Shreveport-Bossier dropped their fifth consecutive road game and fell to 38-45 overall this season.

Gary SouthShore scored one run off Captains starter Robert Bono (L, 0-2) in the first when Mike Massaro came home on a Guerrero groundout to third. But Bono would hold the RailCats scoreless for the next three innings and the Captains took a brief one run lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Shreveport-Bossier scored in the fifth on a bases loaded single by Bryan Sabatella. Provencher would then score on an Alain Quijano (W, 6-4) wild pitch to make it 2-1. Palmer Karr Jr. would strike out with runners on second and third to end the inning and Gary would take the lead for good in the last of the fifth.

After an Adam Klein single and a walk to Massaro, Bono gave up a two-run triple to Brad Boyer which put the RailCats back in the lead. A Guerrero sacrifice fly to center scored Boyer to put Gary up by two.

The Captains would leave one on in the sixth and seventh and the RailCats put the game away in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and a runner on first, Shreveport-Bossier reliever Mark Haynes intentionally walked Boyer. Guerrero then blasted his 11th homer of the year over the right field wall. It was just the second home run allowed by Haynes this season.

The RailCats added one more in the eighth when Mike Rhode scored on an Adam Klein double play ball. Provencher's home run in the ninth, a line drive to left, would make it 8-4, but Chris Little would get Robert Perry to ground out to short to end the game.

Gary's first three hitters in the lineup, Klein, Massaro and Boyer, each had two hits and scored two runs. In the loss, Captains leftfielder Chad Gabriel went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Rightfielder Alex Cowart went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Bono allowed five earned runs and seven hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out five. Quijano went 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four.

With the loss, the Captains fall to 15.5 games behind Grand Prairie in the American Association South Division with 17 to play. Shreveport-Bossier throws lefthander Ryan DiPietro (8-4, 4.54) to the mound Saturday against Gary righthander Ryne Reynoso (3-5, 6.23). First pitch is at 6:05 p.m.
