Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: The Aces and Salt Lake Bees square off in game one of the four-game set at Greater Nevada Field. Greg Gross will send right-hander Neftali Feliz to the mound to take on Salt Lake righty Griffin Canning. Feliz has won five of his last 10 outings and enters tonight's game with an ERA of 3.65 over his last 10 showings. Salt Lake comes in looking to get out of a two-game losing skid and are 4.5 games behind the El Paso Chihuahuas for first place in the Pacific Southern Division.
Last Game: Reno dropped the series finale with Sacramento last night in extra innings. The Aces put up a fight, but couldn't withstand the River Cats. Ildemaro Vargas led the Aces offense last night, finishing with a 2-for-5 performance. Yasmany Tomas cashed in a pinch-hit home run (11th of the season) and Jimmie Sherfy took the loss. The loss brings Sherfy to a record of 2-1 this season.
Pride - Tonight the Reno Aces, in collaboration with Our Center, come together as a community for our 2nd Annual Pride Night at Greater Nevada Field. Many different activities, resources, and fun to be had throughout the night. For more information please visit our Ticket Sales staff behind Section 104.
Blood Saves: In conjunction with United Blood Services, the Reno Aces hosted their second annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive at Greater Nevada Field. We had an incredible turn out as officers and public officials came out in force to donate. In all, we gathered 69 life-saving pints of blood, up from 52 the previous season. With 69 pints, donors helped save up to 207 lives in our Northern Nevada community.
MLB First: Former Reno Aces shortstop, Jack Reinheimer, recorded his first Major League hit last night with the New York Mets in their 16-5 beating of the Baltimore Orioles. Reinheimer finished the night 1-for-2 with a run scored. Before being Designated for Assignment earlier this season, Reinheimer went 45-for-190 (.237) at the plate with nine doubles, two triples, and three home runs with Reno. In Reinheimer's career with the Aces, he recorded 323 hits which is fourth all-time, 55 doubles, 124 RBI, and 177 runs.
Historic: On this day in 2002, Curt Schilling wins his 20th game of the season, striking out 12 Cubs in the D-backs 2-1 victory at Wrigley Field. The 35-year-old right-hander went 23-5 that season.
Returning: Eric Chavez comes to Greater Nevada Field tonight, not as a player, but as the acting manager of the Salt Lake Bees. Chavez replaces former Bees manager Keith Johnson who was called up to work with the Angels infielders in Los Angeles. Chavez finished his career in the Diamondbacks organization following 13 years with the Oakland A's. As a Diamondback, he hit .281 in 2013 in 80 games and had 25 extra-base hits.
Who Are They: Thus far, Salt Lake is beating Reno in the season series at 5-4. Both teams have done better at home, as the Bees are 4-1 at Smith's Ballpark while the Aces are 3-1 at Greater Nevada FIeld. Reno has outscored Salt Lake 66 to 49 in total. After this four-game series, the final series between the two teams will be a three-game series at Smith's Ballpark from August 28 to 30. Only two active Bee's hitters have faced Reno this season while playing for Salt Lake. Jabari Blash has played well in the season series, hitting .346 (9-26) with four homers and nine RBI in eight games. Matt Thaiss has also done well, hitting .333 (13-39) with two home runs and five RBI in nine games. Stephen McGee played five games against Reno while playing for El Paso, hitting .167 (2-12).
Extra Extra: Last night's extra-inning contest was just the fourth of the season for Reno. The Aces are 2- when playing more than 9 innings. Prior to last night, the last time the Aces played extras was on July 26th in New Orleans. The Aces won by a score of 11-7 and Jake Barrett took home the victory.
