Reno Aces Game Notes at Albuquerque

August 24, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: The Aces look to rebound coming off a tough series loss to Tacoma. Greg Gross will send right-hander Taylor Clarke to the mound, who is in search of his 13th win of the season. He'll be opposed by Albuquerque southpaw David Holmberg. This is the second consecutive game the Aces will face a left-handed starter.

Last Game: The Aces dropped the series finale in Tacoma tonight by a score of 3-0. Reno tied the Rainiers in total hits, but couldn't find a way to plate any runners. The night was dominated by pitching from both sides. Joel Payamps turned in his best Triple-A start of the season. The right-hander went seven innings, allowed three hits, and struck out six but ultimately took home the loss. David Rollins went 5.2 innings for the home team and allowed no runs on five hits while adding four strikeouts. The loss drops the Aces to a record of 66-63 and nine games behind the Fresno Grizzlies.

Not So Magic: With a win last night, and an Aces loss, the Fresno Grizzlies will clinch the Pacific Northern Division and a playoff berth for the second time in four seasons with a win and a Reno loss tonight. Two more wins for Fresno or two more Reno losses period will do it. There are still 11 games left to be in the 140-game regular season.

Radio G.O.A.T: On this date in 1960, during a dull game, Vin Scully, the play-by-play voice of the Dodgers, knowing that many fans in the stands follow the game on transistor radios, asks his listeners to help him surprise third base umpire Frank Secory. His ballpark audience responds when the veteran broadcaster tells them, "Let's have some fun. As soon as the inning is over, I'll count to three, and on three everybody yell, 'Happy birthday, Frank!'".

Rare Sighting: Manager Greg Gross and first baseman Kevin Cron were ejected from last night's contest in Tacoma, Washington for arguing a call at first base. Cron hit a ball into the 5-6 hole and was thrown out by Gordon Beckham. Cron and Gross' ejection was the seventh and eighth Aces ejection of the season. Daniel Robertson (4/10), Taylor Clarke (4/16), Gil Heredia (5/27), Greg Gross (5/27), Yasmany Tomas (6/3), Socrates Brito (7/30), Kevin Cron (8/23), Greg Gross (8/23).

Professional Soccer In Reno: A full house is expected at Greater Nevada Field tomorrow night as Reno 1868 FC hosts rival Sacramento Republic FC. Kickoff for the "Donner Pass Derby" match is slated for 7:15 p.m. The last time these two clubs met, Reno came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to capture a 3-2 win in Sacramento. Reno scored all three goals in five minutes to remain unbeaten against its bitter rival. This time, Reno (10-5-8, 38 points) looks to remain undefeated at Greater Nevada Field against Sacramento. Reno leads the all-time regular-season series (3-0-1).

Coming Soon: The Pacific Coast League will name their All-PCL team on Monday, August 27th. Multiple Aces players have made their season-long pitches for this honor.
