WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Alexander Vargas clubbed a walk-off two-run home run in the 12th inning on Friday night at Heritage Financial Park to lift the Hudson Valley Renegades to a 9-7 win over the Jersey Shore BlueClaws.
After Shane Gray (1-1) tossed a scoreless top of the 12th inning, Vargas led off and crushed a 1-1 pitch from Matt Russell (5-6) over the wall in right field to give the Renegades their sixth walk-off victory of the season. It was the first walk-off home run for the Renegades since 2021.
After scoring seven runs in the first three games, the Renegades offense came out firing with a four-run first inning against Sam Aldegheri. Jesus Rodriguez and Alexander Vargas collected RBI singles while Anthony Hall doubled home a run. Spencer Henson plated a run on a groundout to close out the scoring in the inning.
In the second, Hall and Vargas each singled home a run to stretch the Renegades lead to 6-0.
The BlueClaws began to cut into the deficit with a two-run third off Brock Selvidge. After Erick Brito notched a one-out double, he advanced to third base on a wild pitch from Selvidge and scored on an RBI single from Cade Fergus. Otto Kemp then reached on a throwing error by Jared Serna which scored Fergus to cut the Renegades lead to 6-2.
Selvidge issued a walk and a single in the sixth inning before Joel Valdez entered out of the bullpen. The inning included an RBI single from Andrick Nava and a pair of bases-loaded walks to Leandro Pineda and Rixon Wingrove. The BlueClaws tied the game at 6-6 on a fielder's choice from Jared Carr to cap their four-run outburst.
The 'Gades had a chance to win the game in the ninth after Serna hit into a fielder's choice and stole second base. After Wesley Moore struck out Christopher Familia, Serna stole third base but was left stranded there.
Pineda scored Anthony Quirion on a sacrifice fly in the 10th to give the BlueClaws their first lead of the night at 8-7.
Hudson Valley roared back with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Vargas singled to center field to begin the frame and move the extra runner, Anthony Hall, to third. After Vargas stole second, Hall scored and Vargas advanced to third on a Moore balk. Moore ended up stranding a pair of runners on base before Vargas won the game the next inning. The Renegades and BlueClaws continue their six-game series at Heritage Financial Park on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 5:45 p.m.
Renegades Record: 59-47, 20-20
