Renegades Take Two Game Sweep, 4-3

Wappingers Falls, NY- A ninth inning rally fell short for the Aberdeen IronBirds as they lost to the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-3.

With runners on first and third and one out in the top of the ninth, Aberdeen short stop Jared Breen grounded to short stop and reached on a fielder's choice. Catcher Austin Wynns scored from third on the play and the IronBirds were within one run at 4-3. Jeff Kemp then came up and popped out in foul territory to first baseman John Alexander for the final out.

The Renegades scored first in the bottom of the second inning for the second night in a row.

Julian Morillo had a two-RBI single that scored Alexander and center fielder James Harris. He then came around to score on an Ariel Soriano RBI single minutes later to make the score 3-0.

Hudson Valley pushed another run across the plate in the bottom of the third inning on a Granden Goetzman sacrifice fly that scored right fielder Johnny Field. It was the 11th RBI for Goetzman and the 15th run scored for the right fielder out of the University of Arizona.

The IronBirds tallied their first run in the top of the 6th inning on a single off the bat of designated hitter Sam Kimmel. It was the fourth RBI on the season for Kimmel and made it 3-1 in favor of the Renegades. Left fielder Conor Bierfeldt grounded into an inning-ending double play with one out and the bases loaded.

Kimmel struck again in the top of the eighth inning when he grounded out to second baseman Ariel Soriano and scored Jeff Kemp to cut the deficit to two at 4-2.

Mitch Horacek got the start for the IronBirds. He went five innings and gave up seven hits, four runs (all earned), no walks and struck out two. Eric Green made his IronBird debut in relief of Horacek. The lefty pitched three innings and allowed one hit, no runs, three walks and struck out one.

Jaime Schultz got the nod for the Renegades and pitched brilliantly. He worked through four innings, giving up just one hit, no runs, no walks and rang up three batters. Justin Choate came in for the ninth inning and recorded his team-leading fourth save of the year. Horacek took the loss and moves to 3-2 on the year. Colton Reavis picks up the win in relief and now stands at 2-0.

The Renegades swept the two-game series and remain in first place in the McNamara division.

They are now 23-17 on the year and head to Brooklyn to take on the Cyclones for two and then return home quickly for a three game set against the Vermont Lake Monsters.

The IronBirds drop one game under .500 at 18-19. They will head to Staten Island for two games and then head back to Aberdeen to take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for three.
