July 27, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Vermont moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season after Kyle Finnegan and Kayvon Bahramzedeh combined on the Lake Monsters third five-hit shutout in the last week with a 4-0 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Saturday evening at historic Centennial Field.ÃâÃÂ
Finnegan (2-1) allowed just three hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings to earn the victory. A sixth-round selection for Oakland in the 2013 draft out of Texas State, Finnegan has now given up three hits over six scoreless innings in each of his last two starts (Saturday and July 22nd vs. Auburn in a 7-0 Vermont win) and has allowed just four earned runs on 20 hits in 28 2/3 innings (aÃâà1.26 ERA). Ãâàin his seven starts overall.
Bahramzedeh came on in relief of Finnegan to start the seventh inning and allowed two hits with one strikeout over three scoreless innings to earn his first save in his second appearance with the Lake Monsters. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Vermont, including the third five-hit shutout in the last six games (July 22nd vs. Auburn and July 23 at Aberdeen).
The Lake Monsters would get all the runs they would need in the fourth inning as Jaycob Brugman singled with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Luis Baez RBI single to left. Vermont added another run in the fourth on a run-scoring wild pitch, then scored a pair of runs in the seventh as Baez and Josh Miller both scored on a wild pitch by reliever Tanner Bushue for a 4-0 Vermont lead.ÃâÃÂ
Baez, Boog Powell and B.J. Boyd each had two hits for Vermont, which has won eight of its last 10 games to improve from a season-low five games under .500 (12-17) to a game over the .500 mark (20-19) for the first time since July 19, 2012 when the Lake Monsters were 16-15.ÃâÃÂ
Tri-City starter Adrian Houser (0-2) gave up two runs on seven hits over five innings to take the loss for Tri-City (26-14), which lost for the second straight day to Vermont after winning 12 of their previous 15 games. The win moves the Lake Monsters to within 5 1/2 games of the ValleyCats for first-place in the Stedler Division.
Vermont, which is a league-best 13-6 at home this season, will host the Lowell Spinners in a doubleheader at Centennial on Sunday. The first 731 fans will receive a Subway restaurants mystery gift card valued anywhere from $1 to $100.ÃâàThe first of the two seven-inning games will begin at 5:05 pm with gates opening at 4:00 pm.
