Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - After closing out the first month of the season with a league-leading 10-4 record, the Renegades got a rude awakening to start the month of July. The Aberdeen IronBirds came to Dutchess Stadium and swept all three games, outplaying the 'Gades in their own ballpark and leveling the season series at three wins apiece. Two nights ago, Hudson Valley used superb pitching from Ben Griset and Eli Echarry to slip by 3-1. And on Saturday, a three-run second inning was just enough to overpower a late push by the 'Birds in a 4-3 victory.
In the bottom of the first, Darryl George reached first base with one out on a fielding error by IronBirds shortstop Jared Breen. Johnny Field then lashed a double down the third base line where left fielder Conor Bierfeldt started the perfect relay throw to the plate. George was tagged for the second out as Field moved to third on the throw, but Oscar Hernandez popped out to Breen to end the inning.
They scratched a few runs across in the second off Mitch Horacek (3-2), who had won his last three starts. After Granden Goetzman and John Alexander singled with one out, James Harris struck out to bring up the number nine hitter Julian Morillo. Despite having just two RBIs coming in, the Renegades second baseman brought in both runners with a single after they successfully completed a double steal. With the score 2-0 and Morillo in scoring position, Ariel Soriano singled him home to give the 'Gades a three-run lead.
Hudson Valley added one final run in the fourth after Field opened the inning with a single before stealing second base. Oscar Hernandez' groundout to second moved Field to third, and Ryan McChesney would get hit with a 2-2 pitch to place runners at the corners with one out. Goetzman's deep flyball to center scored Field and gave the 'Gades a commanding 4-0 lead.
The IronBirds had a golden opportunity in the sixth against Colton Reavis after the first two hitters reached on a single and a walk. Sam Kimmel then lined a single into center, but Harris let the ball glance off his arm and a run came in to score to get the 'Birds on the board. Reavis then walked the next hitter on four pitches, and he'd leave the game with the bases loaded and nobody out for Andrew Hanse. With the tying runs on base and the score 4-1, Hanse (3-2) struck out the number three hitter Trey Mancini before Bierfeldt grounded into an inning-ending double play started by George at shortstop. Aberdeen later added a run in the eighth and the ninth to cut the deficit to 4-3, but Justin Choate nailed down his team-leading fourth save after Jeff Kemp popped out to end the game with the tying run at first.
