
Gunkel Shuts Down the CT Tigers

Norwich, CT - The Lowell Spinners (21-16) defeated the Connecticut Tigers (16-23) by a score of 2-1 Saturday night at Dodd Stadium. The big hit of the night came in the top of the eighth inning by LF Forrest Allday (1-4) who hit an RBI single to right field that scored 1B Nick Moore (0-2) to give the Spinners a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers struggled with runners on base as they went 1-5 as a team and left five runners in scoring position. The Tigers had an opportunity in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and no outs after three consecutive hits in a row by C Duncan McAlpine (1-4), 1B Patrick Leyland (2-4), and DH Austin Green (2-3). 3B Brett Harrison (0-2) struck out. LF Tyler Gibson (1-3) grounded out into an inning ending double play.
The Tigers received production from Leyland who continued to hit the ball well at the end of July with a pair of hits including a solo homerun.
It was Leyland's second of the season. Green also had a pair of hits for the Tigers.
The Spinners picked up the win on only four hits. As a team they went 4-30. LF Kevin Mager (1-4) hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning that scored SS Tzu-Wei Lin (1-3) that gave the Spinners an early 1-0 lead. The pitching was a key in the Spinners victory as they used three pitcher to combine for nine innings and allowed one run on seven hits.
Starter Teddy Stankiewicz picked up the no decision as he pitched two innings and allowed no runs and no hits. RHP Sergio Gomez pitched 4.1 innings allowing one run on seven hits and struck out five batters. RHP Joe Gunkel (3-0) picked up the win for the Spinners pitching 2.2 innings allowing no runs and no hits. Gunkel came in the seventh inning and got Gibson to ground out into the inning ending double play with the bases loaded.
The Tigers start a two-game road trip with the Tri-City ValleyCats tomorrow at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium at 5:00 p.m. In game one LHP Joe Mantiply (0-1, 1.53) gets the start for the Tigers.
