Rene Garcia hit a pinch-hit walk-off RBI single off Shane Broyles in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Reading Fightin Phils (62-50) a 4-3 win over the New Britain Rock Cats (53-58). Reading extended their winning streak to five games.
New Britain took a 1-0 lead off Nick Pivetta in the top of the first inning. Pivetta walked four batters and struck out three batters. David Dahl scored on a wild pitch. Pivetta would settle down as he would strikeout seven batters over the next three innings. Mike Tauchman singled in Zach Osborne for New Britain's second run of the game in the top of the 5th. Rock Cats would take a 2-0 lead.
Pivetta allowed two runs off four hits and four walks in five innings with seven strikeouts. Ryan O'Sullivan pinch-hit for Pivetta in the bottom of the fifth inning and began pitching in the top of the sixth. O'Sullivan tossed two scoreless innings as he recorded two strikeouts.
New Britain took a 3-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning as Jordan Patterson hit a RBI double off Jimmy Cordero to score Mike Tauchman. Reading powered back to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cameron Perkins and Brock Stassi hit back-to-back singles off Austin House to start the inning. Andrew Knapp hit them both home with a two-run triple off House that cut the Rock Cats' lead to 3-2.
Angelo Mora tied the game at 3-3 with a RBI single off House to score Knapp. Stephen Shackleford (4-1) pitched two shutout innings in relief as he earned his fourth win of the season. Shane Broyles (0-5) was the losing pitcher
JP Crawford and manager Dusty Wathan were both ejected from the game in the top of the seventh inning for arguing balls and strikes.
The Fightin Phils and Rock Cats continue their series on Saturday night. First pitch is at 6:35 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 6:05 pm. Fans can view the game on MiLB.tv beginning at 6:35 pm.
