Baysox Offense Falters in Extra Innings Loss

Bowie, Md. - Despite 11 hits, the Baysox managed to score just two runs in a 3-2 loss in 11 innings to New Hampshire Friday night. The Baysox batted 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base in their third loss in the last four games. The Baysox Western Division lead is now down to four games after a win by Altoona Friday.

Making his second start of the season, Gene Escat was again solid for the Baysox. He tied a career-high with five innings pitched, giving up two runs on two hits in the no decision.

The Fisher Cats struck first in the second inning after Escat gave up a lead-off walk to Ryan Schimpf who was moved to second on a ground out from Derrick Chung. Schimpf scored on a single from Emilio Guerrero. While attempting to field the line drive, left fielder Quincy Latimore let the ball roll past him all the way to the warning track and the error cost the Baysox a run. Guerrero scored all the way from first base on the play and New Hampshire went up 2-0.

The Baysox picked up a run in the seventh inning against New Hampshire starter Taylor Cole thanks to a lead-off triple from Mike Yastrzemski. Rossmel Perez knocked him in with a ground out to make the score 2-1.

Corban Joseph tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth with a home run to right field off Fisher Cats reliever Danny Barnes.

The Fisher Cats finally broke the tie in the 11th inning. With Andrew Robinson on the mound, Shane Orpitz led off with a single and a passed ball moved him to second base. Ryan Schimpf followed with a walk and, after a second passed ball, K.C. Hobson plated the winning run on a single up the middle to give the Fisher Cats a 3-2 victory.

Baysox relievers Marcel Prado, Kenn Kasparek and Andrew Triggs combined to throwing four scoreless innings behind Escat, allowing just three hits and striking out three. Robinson took the loss, throwing the final two innings and allowing one runs on two hits and two walks.

New Hampshire's Dustin Antolin (3-2, 2.49) earned his third win of the year with Blake McFarland (2-2, 2.08) picking up his 11th save.

The Baysox play the second game of the series against New Hampshire on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. with Joe Gunkel (5-2, 2.89) on the mound. It's Glow in the Park Night and there will be fireworks after the game.
