ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Victoria Salmon Kings, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday evening before a crowd of 6,419 at Citizens Business Bank Arena. The game marked the last regular season meeting between the clubs.
Victoria left wing Chad Painchaud, who leads the Salmon Kings in points against the Reign this season, scored the first goal of the game at 4:55 in the first period. Defenseman Taylor Ellington sent a feed out ahead of the play to Painchaud, who was alone as he streaked towards Ontario goaltender Mike Zacharias. Painchaud's shot slid through the crease and over the goal line, giving the Salmon Kings a 1-0 lead.
Left wing Peter Lenes scored the equalizer for the Reign with his shot that bounced off the pads of Salmon Kings netminder David Shantz and over the goal line. His unassisted goal at 5:36 in the second period marked the left winger's ninth goal of the season.
Greg Hogeboom gave the Reign a one point lead with his power play goal less than three minutes later. Peter Lenes chipped a pass over to Hogeboom, who fired off a shot that went top-shelf and sent the water bottle flying. Lenes' assist on the play marked his second point of the night. Hogeboom's goal closed out scoring in the second period, and the clubs geared up for the final period with the Reign leading, 2-1.
Peter Lenes scored his second goal and third point of the night at 4:22 in the third period. Lenes caught a pass from Greg Hogeboom in front of the net and snapped a shot past Shantz low on his stick side. Defenseman Shawn Germain also registered an assist on Ontario's third unanswered goal, which put the Reign up, 3-1.
Center Olivier Latendresse finally answered back for the Salmon Kings during a power play at 7:49. Defenseman Jimmy Sharrow claimed the assist on the play, and Victoria cut the Reign's lead to one goal. With 5:30 left in regulation, center Olivier Filion tied the game at three goals with an assist from forward Randall Gelech. Filion flipped the puck into the empty side of the net before Zacharias could slide over to the make the save. Neither team scored again for the remainder of regulation, so the teams headed into a five-minute 4-on-4 overtime session.
Forward Michael Pelech netted the game winner for Ontario 1:44 into overtime. Defenseman David Walker snapped a pass to Pelech just outside of the right face-off circle and Pelech threw the puck into the back of the goal. Center Tim Kraus also claimed an assist on the game-winning goal, and Ontario took the win in overtime with a final score of Reign 4, Salmon Kings 3.
Three stars:
1. ONT - Michael Pelech
2. ONT - Peter Lenes
3. VIC - Olivier Latendresse
