Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Ontario, CA - The eight-game season finale between the Victoria Salmon Kings and Ontario Reign concluded at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on Sunday night. Victoria's David Shantz got the nod in net while Ontario started Mike Zacharias.
Victoria got on the board first when Taylor Ellington sent Chad Painchaud away on a partial break. Painchaud burst down the left side with Reign defenseman Andrew Martens draped on top of him. Painchaud went hard to the net and pushed the puck past Zacharias. It would stand as the lone marker as the Salmon Kings led 1-0 after one period..
Ontario would rebound in the second frame when Peter Lenes would steal the puck in the Victoria zone and go in all alone. His shot barely squeezed through the legs of Shantz and trickled across the line for the goal. The Reign would capture the lead on a 5-on-3 power play when Greg Hogeboom snapped a shot glove side corner past Shantz. That would end the scoring in the second period as Ontario led 2-1 through 40 minutes.
The third period saw Ontario extend their lead when Hogeboom fed Lenses on a 2-on-1. Lenes one-timed the shot past the Kings' netminder. Victoria would cut into the lead on the power play, Olivier Latendresse capitalized on a 4-on-2 rush when he wired a wrist shot past Zacharias from the right face-off dot. The Kings would draw even when Olivier Filion found a puck in the slot and spun around shooting a wrist shot in the net to tie the game at 3-3. The teams moved into overtime. The Reign took advantage during the 4-on-4 session and moved the puck around the Kings' zone setting up Michael Pelech for a one-timer that would end the game. Reign 4 Salmon Kings 3 in OT.
Victoria went 1/333.3% on the power play while Ontario was 1/6-16.7%. The Salmon Kings Outshot the Reign 30-28.
The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre next week meeting the Las Vegas Wranglers for a three-game set with contests on Thursday, December 10th, Friday, December 11th, and Saturday, December 12th.
