Reign Halt Rampage in Overtime

San Antonio, TX - Forward Michael Mersch buried his team-leading seventh goal of the season 21 seconds into overtime to propel the Ontario Reign (9-2-2-0) over the San Antonio Rampage (9-1-5-0) 4-3 at AT&T Center Friday night.

Reign forward Ryan Horvat opened the scoring 2:39 into the contest tipping in a pass from forward Joel Lowery between the legs of Rampage netminder Spencer Martin (OTL, 35 saves on 39 shots). Defenseman Jeff Schultz grabbed the second assist. Forward Scott Sabourin made it 2-0 midway through the frame, redirecting a shot from defenseman Nick Ebert inside the left post at 11:30. Horvat picked up his second point of the game with the secondary assist.

In the middle stanza, forward Sean Backman capitalized on the power play at 13:52 to give the Reign a three-goal advantage of a faceoff win from forward Nic Dowd. Moments later, defenseman Maxim Noreau put the Rampage on the scoreboard, slipping a shot under the pads of Reign goaltender Peter Budaj (W, 27 saves on 30 shots) at 17:27.

Rampage forward Colin Smith made it a one-goal game early in the third period with man-advantage marker, deflecting a shot under the blocker of Budja at 4:43. Forward Josh Hishon erased the Reign's lead with 1:37 left in regulation with a power-play marker to force overtime.

Just 21 seconds into the extra session, Reign defenseman Vincent LoVerde bulldozed down the left wing and cut to the top of the crease of Martin. After making the initial save, Martin knocked the rebound to the stick of Mersch who secured the win into the open net. The Reign finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play while the Rampage when 2-for-6.

The Ontario Reign finish their three-game road trip tomorrow, Saturday, November 21 against the Texas Stars at Cedar Park Center at 5:00 p.m. PT.
