Peoria Rivermen News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa (March 23, 2009) - The Peoria Rivermen jumped back into third place with a 3-2 victory over the Iowa Chops on Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena. Steve Regier's goal to open the third period broke a 2-2 tie and snapped a personal 21-game goal drought. It was his sixth game-winning goal of the season.
The win pushed the Rivermen (37-31-2-2, 78 points) back ahead of the Rockford IceHogs (35-29-0-6, 76 points) for third place in the standings. The Rivermen finished their five-game road trip with a record of 2-1-2 and earned six of a possible 10 points from San Antonio, Houston and Iowa. Peoria will finish the regular season with six of their remaining eight games at home.
Two quick goals in the second period erased a 1-0 deficit courtesy of Matt Beleskey goal from the first. Cam Paddock scored his third goal of the trip at 1:58 to tie the game at 1-1. Steve Wagner, back in the lineup after missing two games with an illness, found Paddock on the doorstep for a one-timer. After David LeNeveu made the first stop, Paddock lifted the rebound home for his eighth of the season.
A mere 2:12 later, Yan Stastny gave the Rivermen their first lead of the game. Chris Porter earned his eighth point in the last seven games by feeding Stastny just outside the offensive zone. Stastny worked his way into the right circle before snapping one under the glove of LeNeveu. It was Stastny's sixth of the season and third in the past two games.
The lone power-play goal of the game allowed the Chops to tie the score at 2-2. With Trent Whitfield in the box for kneeing, it took just four seconds for Iowa to knock one past Manny Legace. Eric Boguniecki pushed home the rebound after Peteri Wirtanen won the faceoff into the slot.
Legace kept the game scoreless as time expired in the second period by kicking away a point-blank deflection. He finished with 27 saves and was named the No. 3 star of the game.
Regier's 18th goal of the season came following a two-on-one at 3:32 of the third period. Working in with Jonathan Filewich, Regier pulled in close and ripped a shot under the bar for the eventual game-winner.
The Rivermen finished their season series against the Chops with a 3-4-1 record. Peoria finished 0-for-4 on the power play while the Chops were 1-for-5. The game featured fights between Jeff Cowan and Ryan Donally, and Ryan Reaves and Brennan Evans.
Peoria returns to Carver Arena on Friday night to face the first-place Milwaukee Admirals at 7 p.m. The Rivermen have won a franchise-record six consecutive games at home. Following the game, country music star Jimmy Wayne will perform. Tickets are available at the Peoria Civic Center Box Office, by calling (309) 676-1040 or online at www.rivermen.net/tickets.
