Reed Blitzes Camden

The Barnstormers left-hander fanned 12 in eight shutout innings, pitching the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 2-0 victory over the Camden Riversharks in the opener of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Reed's effort kept the Barnstormers 4 1/2 games ahead of the York Revolution in the Freedom Division chase. York beat Bridgeport, 10-6, on Friday evening on Salvador Paniagua's walkoff grand slam.

Camden managed five hits, including doubles by Mike Kerns and Carlos Guzman off Reed (7-7), but he never allowed a runner to get to third. The Reading native yielded consecutive singles to Zach MacPhee and Michael Rockett in the third inning but battled back to retire Brandon Chaves on a pop up to first base and Paddy Matera on a fly to short right field.

Following Kerns' double into the right field corner in the fifth, Reed fanned both MacPhee and Rockett, then got Chaves to beat a one-hopper back to the mound for a quick exit to the inning. He whiffed both Joel Guzman and Daniel Rockett in the sixth after the long double to left by Carlos Guzman.

Reed struck out two batters in each of his last five innings. He surrendered his only walk of the night to Chaves with one out in the eighth before getting a force out and a strikeout of Carlos Guzman to finish his night.

Marcus Walden needed only six pitches to retire the side in order in the ninth, earning his 11th save.

The Barnstormers did not have a prolific night on offense, either, but they nicked Sean Gleason (6-13) for their runs in the fourth. Luke Hughes, in his first game back from an inflamed Achilles tendon, launched a homer onto the hillside leading off the inning. Tyler Bortnick beat out an infield single and scored when Charlie Cutler doubled into the left center field alley past Daniel Rockett's diving try.

Lancaster hosts Camden again on Saturday. The Barnstormers will send Chad Beck (3-3) to the mound against left-hander Danny Herrera (6-4). Fireworks will follow the game. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: Reed fell one short of the franchise record for strikeouts in a game, held by Eric Junge...The last Barnstormer to fan 12 was Derrick Loop at Long Island in August, 2012...Reed is 6-1 in his last eight starts...He has not surrendered in run to Camden in his last two starts against the Riversharks...Walden has saves in seven of his last eight appearances and has not allowed an earned run in 10.
