SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters suffered their third-straight loss to the Somerset Patriots, falling 4-1 in front of 3,952 fans at Constellation Field. The loss drops the Skeeters to 59-66 on the season.
Starting pitcher Miguel Martinez had a nice outing in his debut with the Skeeters. The southpaw gave up two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts over five innings of play. He was saddled with the loss, however, as the offense produced just one run and four hits.
Much like the last two nights, Somerset was able to claim an early 1-0 lead over the Skeeters. Matt Fields lifted Martinez's 2-1 offering to straightaway center for his first home run with the Patriots after joining the squad earlier this week.
The Patriots tacked on an additional run against Martinez in the top of the fifth. Thomas Neal smashed a single off the wall in left with one out before Jonny Tucker poked a single over the outstretched glove of Renny Osuna to put a pair on-base. David Vidal drew a walk to load the bases when Michael Burgess drove in a run with an RBI groundout, moving the score to 2-0.
The Patriots expanded the lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh. Neal opened the inning with a single through the right-side of the infield to open the frame. Tucker dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error from third baseman Patrick Palmeiro allowed Neal to score from first. Tucker advanced all the way to third before coming in to score on a sacrifice fly from Burgess.
The Skeeters got a run back in the bottom of the inning to narrow the score to 4-1. Johan Limonta singled to left to start the frame and Denny Almonte was beamed to put two on-base. Osuna hit a bloop single into shallow left-center before Daryle Ward drove in Limonta with a pinch-hit, RBI single to trim the gap to three.
Sugar Land was unable to close the gap for the remainder of the night, however, suffering its third-straight loss to the Patriots, 4-1.
