Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers have led the Atlantic League in home runs most of the season.
Lately, they have been scarce. Until the eighth inning on Saturday night.
Lance Zawadzki and Luke Hughes hit back-to-back blasts with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overturn a Camden lead and produce a 5-4 Barnstormers victory over the Riversharks Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The win kept Lancaster 4 1/2 games ahead of the York Revolution in the Freedom Division's second half race. York defeated Bridgeport, 2-1, on Saturday.
Rob Bryson (1-1), Camden's third pitcher of the night, carried a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth. He yielded a leadoff single to left to Kent Matthes, then immediately picked him off first. Brian Cavazos-Galvez fouled to catcher Mike Kerns on the first pitch, bringing up Zawadzki. The Lancaster shortstop battled to a 3-2 count, fouling off several pitches, before yanking a drive over the back ad wall in right center for his league-leading 16th homer of the season.
Hughes immediately followed with a deep fly into the right center field screen to give Lancaster the quick lead.
The Barnstormers struck quickly for a 2-0 lead. Yusuke Kajimoto singled to right and scored on a double to right center by Zach Collier. Kent Matthes lashed a ball past shortstop Brandon Chaves for an RBI single.
Herrera retired the side in order from there, and Camden bounced back on Mat Gamel's two-run homer to right in the top of the second.
Collier put Lancaster back in the lead when his fly ball to shallow left was lost in the twilight by Zach MacPhee, allowing Anderson Feliz to cross with a run.
A double by Brandon Chaves tied the game in the third, and Kerns' double drove in Daniel Rockett with two outs in the fourth to give Camden its lead.
Meanwhile, Lancaster sent only three batters to the plate in four of the next five innings, and the 4-7 hitters were a combined 0-for-13 on the night, prior to the Zawadzki homer.
Al Yevoli (1-0) picked up the win for the Barnstormers after two different Riversharks were thrown out stealing in the top of the eighth. Scott Patterson worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Kyle Simon (4-0) makes a spot start for the Barnstormers on Sunday afternoon against right-hander Wes Torrez (6-7). Former New York Mets All-Star right-hander Dwight "Doc" Gooden will be on hand.
