Skeeters Add Plethora of Arms to Pitching Staff

SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters and manager Gary Gaetti announced the signing of pitchers, Justin Klipp, Miguel Martinez, Fernando Nieve, Stephen Nikonchik and Chris Treibt prior to the contest with Somerset on Saturday. Nieve spent two seasons with the Houston Astros while Martinez brings 12-years of professional experience to the Skeeters. Additionally reliever Andrew Carpenter elected to hang up the spikes and retire after an illustrious professional career.

Nieve, 33, spent parts of four seasons at the Major League level, including two with the Houston Astros in 2006 and 2010. He holds an 8-11 record in Major League Baseball with a 4.61 ERA over 99 games and 19 starts with the Astros and Mets. The 15-year veteran out of Venezuela boasts an 81-82 record over his career with a 4.27 ERA. Earlier this season, Nieve pitched for Southern Maryland, going 1-1 in 20 appearances with a 1.82 ERA and two saves.

Martinez, 32, began his career with the Seattle Mariners organization after being selected in the 37th-round of the 2001 draft from Miami-Dade College. He brings three years of Atlantic League experience to the Skeeters after spending time with the Road Warriors, Bluefish and Riversharks. The southpaw holds a career 38-45 record with a 4.47 ERA.

Additionally, Justin Klipp, Stephen Nikonchik and Chris Treibt were all added to the roster earlier this afternoon. The trio combines for eight years of professional experience, all pitching solely in Independent Leagues

Carpenter elected to call it a career after pitching in last night's contest. This year with the Skeeters, he went 3-4 with 37 strikeouts in 29 appearances. He spent five seasons in Major League Baseball with the Phillies, Padres and Blue Jays. He holds a 70-55 record with a 4.13 ERA.

To make room on the roster, Ramon Delgado and Derrick Loop were placed on the disabled list while Sean Gallagher and Adrian Martin were moved to the inactive list.

The Skeeters continue the 2015 campaign against Somerset this evening at the friendly confines of Constellation Field. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. with gates opening at 5.
