Yesterday (6/26), the Bats activated OF Gary Matthew Jr., who agreed to terms on a minor league contract on Thursday, June 24. Matthews, 35, earlier this season appeared in 36 games for the New York Mets. In 2006 while with the Texas Rangers, Matthews was an American League All-Star and joined his father, Gary Matthews Sr., in becoming only the 11th father-son duo to play in an All-Star game. Last season for the Los Angeles of Angels of Anaheim he produced 50 RBI in 80 starts in the outfield, including 46 starts in center field. In 2009 Matthews hit .358 with runners in scoring position and .395 with runners in scoring position and 2 outs, the sixth-best mark in the Major Leagues.

To make room for Matthews Jr ., the Reds released Louisville native Chris Burke . Burke played in 66 games for the Bats this season, batting .238 with five home runs and 26 runs batted in. His 38 runs scored were the second most on the team.
