The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves beat the Columbus Clippers 11-7 at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio Sunday night in game three of the four-game series. The Braves up their record to 35-42 and picked up a game on the first place Durham Bulls in the International League South, as the Bulls lost to Lehigh Valley 4-2 in Durham. The Braves are now 10.5 games in back of the Bulls. The Clippers are 46-31 and saw their lead in the IL West slip to 3 games over Indianapolis as the Indians beat Toledo15-3.
It Was Over When: Matt Diaz, on his second rehab game from Atlanta, hit a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to right field that gave the Braves a 9-6 lead. The Braves trailed 3-0 going to the second inning, but scored six times in the top of the inning to surge ahead 6-3. However, Jo Jo Reyes allowed three Columbus runs in the bottom of the second to knot the game at six. The three-RBI double by Diaz would give the G-Braves a lead they would never lose.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: LHP Jo Jo Reyes only worked four innings because of a high pitch count (107). He allowed 7 R/ER on 9 hits and struck out 5. Stephen Marek entered in the fifth and was credited with the win, pitching 2 innings and striking out 4. Michael Dunn worked the seventh and eighth and struck out 3. Craig kimbrel struck out 2 in the ninth inning.
At the plate: The Braves banged out double-digit hits for the third straight game in the series, with 14 on the day. Matt Young went 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored to up his hitting streak to four games. The double by Diaz was the third one of his two hits in four at-bats, with three RBIs. Freddie Freeman, Joe Thurston and Wes Timmons each collected two hits.
The opposition:
On the Mound: RHP Yohan Pino got the loss, allowing 9 R/ER on 11 hits in 2.2 IP.
At the plate: Michael Brantley continued his torrid pace for the Clippers. He went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Luis Valbuena went 2-for-5 and Jared Goedert was 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the fourth, his 8th of the season. Jordan Brown and Wes Hodges each drove in two runs.
On Deck: The Braves and Clippers conclude their four-game series Monday night in Columbus. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. RHP Todd Redmond (7-7, 4.41 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Braves. Columbus will start RHP Josh Tomlin (7-2, 2.70 ERA).
