Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Left fielder Alex Presley posted the first-ever cycle for an Indianapolis Indians player at Victory Field and the Tribe offense belted a Victory Field-record five home runs as they went on to trounce the Toledo Mud Hens 15-3 in front of a crowd of 10,126 on Sunday afternoon.
Presley began the afternoon with a two-out triple in the bottom of the first before he roped a run-scoring single the following frame. The Triple-A rookie then belted his first career Triple-A home run in the middle of back-to-back-to-back jacks in the third inning before he made history with his double to lead-off the fifth.
However, Presley's historical effort was not the only record to fall on Sunday afternoon as DH Jeff Clement, 3B Brian Myrow, RF Brandon Moss and 1B Steve Pearce and Presley all belted home runs to set a new Victory Field standard with five team home runs.
Clement and Myrow began the power surge when they went back-to-back to lead-off the second and help propel the Tribe to six runs in the frame. But the consecutive clubbings were not done yet as the Indians posted another six runs on the board in the bottom of the third by way of back-to-back-to-back round-trippers by Moss, Presley and Pearce.
The home run barrage in the third marked the first time during the Indians' affiliation with the Pirates that the Tribe has ever belted three straight homers and helped propel the Indians to a season-high 15 runs on 19 hits.
Every Indians' batter recorded at least one hit, with Presley (5-for-6, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI) leading the way with five and SS Doug Bernier (4-for-5, 3 R, 1 RBI) turning in a career day with four hits and three runs scored. Moss (2-for-6, 2 R, 1 HR, 5 RBI) also remained red-hot for the Indians as he collected five more RBI to give him 14 RBI and four home runs over his last five games, while in his first game in an Indians' uniform 2B Akinori Iwamura (1-for-3, 3 R, 3 BB) drew three walks and scored three times.
Indians' RHP Hayden Penn (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) continued to pitch well in June as he struck out five over six innings of work to earn the victory and improve to 4-2 overall. Toledo starter Billy Buckner (2.2 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs on eight hits in just 2.2 innings of work.
With the win, Indianapolis' record improves to 43-34, while Toledo falls to 41-36 on the season. The victory was the fourth straight win for the Tribe and ups their record against the Mud Hens to 5-8 this season
Indianapolis looks for the four-game sweep over division rival Toledo on Monday, June 28 at 7:00 p.m. LHP Brian Burres is expected to get the call for the Indians, while LHP Ryan Ketchner is the probable starter for the Mud Hens.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 6:40 p.m.
