Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Greg Golson's 13th inning sacrifice fly that scored Reegie Corona proved to be the difference in the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees' 2-1 win over the Rochester Red Wings Saturday night at PNC Field.

Corona led off the inning and lined a triple down the right-field line, his third of the year, off Rochester reliever Matt Macri, who is normally the team's third baseman and who hasn't pitched since turning pro.

"You're just trying to get on base," Corona said. "I got a good pitch to hit and I hit it. It's a great feeling when you help the team get a win."

Then, after Eric Bruntlett fouled out to first, Golson lifted a high fly ball to center that Corona easily scored on.

The run was the first for either team since the sixth inning, and Corona was the first batter for either team to reach third base since he did it in the eighth.

Rochester broke through first in the game, scoring one run in the sixth inning.

Leftfielder Jacques Jones singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a double by first baseman Brock Peterson.

With one out in the inning, Yankees starter Ivan Nova intentionally walked Jose Morales to load the bases after falling behind on a 2-0 count to the designated hitter.

D'Angelo Jimenez then hit a soft groundball to Corona that allowed Jones to score from third.

The Yankees responded quickly, tying the game on a mammoth Jesus Montero solo homerun to center.

It was Montero's second of three hits on the night, and his fifth homerun of the year.

After struggling for much of the season, the Yankees' young catcher seems to be turning a corner. Montero is batting .321 over his last 10 games, including three doubles, two triples and two homeruns.

While the Yankees did not score again until Corona's run in the 13th, the team had plenty of chances and would have put up several runs had it not been for an outstanding defensive night by Red Wings centerfielder Dustin Martin.

"Mr. Martin in centerfield is probably the player of the game for either side," Yankees manager Dave Miley said. "We won the game, but every time we thought the ball was going to fall in and we were going to plate a couple of runs, he's leaving his feet (to make the catch)."

Ivan Nova started the game for the Yankees and continued his strong season. The righty went 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball, despite not having his best stuff. He allowed six hits while walking four batters and striking out four more.

With the outing, Nova continued his dominant June. He is 3-0 in the month and has a 1.33 ERA while holding opponents to a .248 average.

The teams meet in the second game of the series Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Anthony Swarzak will get the start for Rochester, while Zach McAllister will take the hill for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
