Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell 8-1 to the Pawtucket Red Sox Sunday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Chiefs (44-34) are 3-4 on their current eight game homestand. With the win, Pawtucket (34-42) improves to 14-15 against IL North opponents.
Pawtucket did all of their damage early, piling on all eight of their runs in the game's first three innings.
Ryan Shealy got the Red Sox off to a good start, doubling home Jorge Jimenez and Niuman Romero to put Pawtucket up 2-0.
After the Chiefs scored on a balk in the bottom of the second the Paw Sox answered by putting up five runs in the following half inning. Romero got on base again for Pawtucket with a leadoff single. He came around to score in the next at bat after Shealy left the yard for his 12th homer of the season. After a Ryan Kalish walk in the next at bat, Chiefs starter Jason Jones was replaced by Collin Balester. Two batters later Josh Reddick, who was just sent down from the majors by Boston a day earlier, whacked a three-run shot to left. That hit put Pawtucket up 8-1.
Rightfielder Kevin Mench came in from the outfield to pitch a scoreless ninth in his pitching debut for the Chiefs. Balester, Severino, Villone and Mench held the Red Sox scoreless in the game's final five innings.
Michael Bowden moved to 3-3 with the win Sunday. He tossed six innings for Pawtucket, allowing four hits and one earned run. He walked three and struck out four.
Jones was hit with his second loss. He pitched two innings for the Chiefs, surrendering seven hits and six earned runs.
Shealy led the Pawtucket offense with three hits and four RBI. Romero chipped in with a two for five effort for the Paw Sox.
Chiefs designated hitter Jason Botts had a two for three day. He was the only hitter in Trent Jewett's lineup with more than one hit.
Syracuse will battle Pawtucket again Monday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse's Shairon Martis (4-5, 4.00) will go up against Pawtucket righty Ramon Ramirez (1-2, 5.48) in the final game of the Chiefs' eight-game homestand. First pitch will be at 7:00.
